Vote for your rights

Since the Citizens United decision last year, in which the U.S. Supreme Court opened the door for even more corporate money in our elections, I’ve been increasingly concerned about the ability of corporations to decide what happens in our country and our city.

We see it locally in our neighborhoods, where development corporations are able to establish rights that require changes in our planning and zoning. Over and over, corporations get approval for these changes, even when we see neighborhood after neighborhood rise up in opposition. There’s a growing movement to change this, to eliminate the authority of corporations to make critical decisions for our neighborhoods and our city. I saw this when I attended the Occupy Spokane rally recently. It was inspiring to see so many people from all walks of life coming together to let their voices be heard.

Proposition 1, on the Spokane ballot this fall, is a key piece of this. It will ensure that residents of the city are able to make the critical decisions that directly affect us in our neighborhoods, with the river, in our workplaces – not corporations.

This is about establishing community rights over corporate rights.

Join me in voting yes for Proposition 1.
