College football roundup: Cowboys prevail

Brandon Weeden threw for a school-record 502 yards and four touchdowns, and Joseph Randle scored the final, tiebreaking 23-yard TD with 2:16 remaining to lift No. 3 Oklahoma State to a 52-45 victory against No. 17 Kansas State on Saturday night in Stillwater, Okla.

The Cowboys (9-0, 6-0 Big 12) matched the best start in school history and survived quite a scare from K-State (7-2, 4-2), which had three shots at the end zone in the final 12 seconds.

Collin Klein missed on 5-yard passes intended for Tyler Lockett and Chris Harper and then overshot Tramaine Thompson in the end zone as time expired. Oklahoma State’s players rushed onto the field to celebrate, their national championship hopes still intact.

All-America receiver Justin Blackmon caught 13 passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns, atoning for his two-fumble game with a 54-yard touchdown catch with 4:47 left that pulled the Cowboys out of a 38-37 deficit.

(7) Oklahoma 41, Texas A&M 25: Landry Jones threw two TD passes and Roy Finch and Blake Bell added short TD runs on consecutive possessions as the Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) pulled away to beat the Aggies (5-4, 3-3) in Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma All-America receiver Ryan Broyles left the game in the third quarter with an apparent left knee injury. He had two catches for 87 yards and both helped set up scores.

(8) Arkansas 44, (10) South Carolina 28: Tyler Wilson threw for 299 yards and two TDs as the Razorbacks (8-1, 4-1 SEC) held on for a win over the Gamecocks (7-2, 5-2) in Fayetteville, Ark.

Jarius Wright added four catches for 103 yards and a pair of TDs, and Dennis Johnson had a 98-yard kickoff return for a score for the Razorbacks, who won their fifth straight.

Northwestern 28, (9) Nebraska 25: Second-string quarterback Kain Colter ran for two TDs and passed for another to lead the Wildcats (4-5, 2-4 Big Ten) to an upset win over the Cornhuskers (7-2, 3-2) in Lincoln, Neb.

Filling in for injured starter Dan Persa in the second half, Colter scored from the 1 with 1:34 left to finish a 13-play, 66-yard drive that took more than 7 minutes off the clock after the Huskers had pulled to 21-18.

Iowa 24, (13) Michigan 16: Marcus Coker ran for 132 yards and a pair of TDs and the Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-2 Big Ten) held off the Wolverines (7-2, 3-2) in Iowa City, Iowa.

James Vandenberg added 171 yards passing and a TD for the Hawkeyes, who’ve won three straight over Michigan for the first time.

(14) Houston 56, UAB 13: Case Keenum threw for 407 yards to become the most prolific passer in NCAA history and he added his first two rushing TDs of the season to lead the Cougars (9-0, 5-0 C-USA) past the Blazers (1-8, 1-5) in Birmingham, Ala.

Keenum passed Timmy Chang’s career record of 17,072 yards passing for Hawaii from 2000-04. Keenum finished the game with 17,212 yards passing.

(15) Michigan State 31, Minnesota 24: Le’Veon Bell’s 35-yard TD run with 10:58 remaining helped the Spartans (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten) hold off the Golden Gophers (2-7, 1-4) in East Lansing, Mich.

Bell ran for 96 yards and two TDs, and Kirk Cousins threw for 296 yards and a pair of TDs. The Spartans trailed 24-21 after three quarters before rallying.

(18) Georgia 63, New Mexico State 16: Aaron Murray threw five second-quarter TD passes, former walk-on receiver Brandon Harton ran for 98 yards and the Bulldogs (7-2) won their seventh straight by romping past the Aggies (3-6) in Athens, Ga.

(19) Wisconsin 62, Purdue 17: Montee Ball rushed for a career-high 223 yards with three TDs and the Badgers (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) rebounded from back-to-back losses with a rout of the Boilermakers (4-5, 2-3) in Madison, Wis.

(23) Cincinnati 26, Pittsburgh 23: Zach Collaros threw for 214 yards and ran for two TDs as the Bearcats (7-1, 3-0) took firm control of the Big East race with a win over the Panthers (4-5, 2-2) in Pittsburgh.

Louisville 38, (24) West Virginia 35: Teddy Bridgestone threw for one TD, Andrew Johnson returned a blocked field goal for another score and the Cardinals (5-4, 3-1 Big East) shocked the Mountaineers (6-3, 2-2) in Morgantown, W.Va.

Notre Dame 24, Wake Forest 17: Tommy Rees threw two TD passes and the Fighting Irish (6-3) shut out the Demon Deacons (5-4) in the second half en route to a victory in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Texas 52, Texas Tech 20: Freshman Joe Bergeron ran for 191 yards and three TDs and the Longhorns (6-2, 3-2 Big 12) routed the Red Raiders (5-4, 2-4) in Austin, Texas.

Ohio State 34, Indiana 20: Braxton Miller ran for two scores including an 81-yarder and Travis Howard had a key interception as the Buckeyes (6-3, 3-2 Big Ten) defeated the Hoosiers (1-9, 0-6) in Columbus, Ohio.

Navy 42, Troy 14: Kriss Proctor ran for two TDs and passed for another in his return from injury, helping the Midshipmen (3-6) end a six-game skid with a win over the Trojans (2-6) in Annapolis, Md.

Air Force 24, Army 14: Quarterback Tim Jefferson scored twice and the Falcons (5-4) rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to beat the Black Knights (3-6) in Air Force Academy, Colo., and retain the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy.
