‘Almost Maine,’ ‘Oliver!’ open at high schools

Students at North Central High School fall in and out of love like they fall and bruise their knees, in the romantic comedy “Almost Maine,” beginning Wednesday. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:30. Performances will continue through Nov. 19.

The story is set in the fictitious town of Almost, at 9 p.m., in 9-degree weather. The production tells a sad, funny tale of love found, love lost, broken then mending hearts, in a performance described as a “charming midwinter night’s dream.”

The “Almost” cast includes Travis Bryant, as Pete; Amanda VanWagenen, as Ginette; Gus Johnston, as East; Mikyla Bordner, as Glory; Jake DeVleming, as Jimmy; Amadi Alegria, as Sandrine; Mary Wisbey, as Villian; Allison Ruster, as Marvalyn; Elijah Hiler, as Steve; Elsa Anderson, as Gayle; Jordan Leandertson, as Lendall; Nick Fortner, as Randy; Aldrik Ensminger, as Chad; Theo Olson, as Phil; Shakyla Hacker, as Marci; Alyssa Chamberlain, as Hope; Kyle Sogge, as Daniel; Kailee Theisen, as Suzette; Breanna Butler, as Rhonda; and Ethan Dahl, as Dave.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $4 for senior citizens and NC and GSL students. Tickets may be purchased at the NC business office or at the door for performances that are not sold out.

“Almost Maine” is not appropriate for children younger than 5.

‘Oliver!’ opens tonight at Ferris

Ferris High School students will have their audience begging for more when their production of “Oliver!” takes the stage, beginning tonight at 7 p.m. in the Ferris auditorium. Other performances include Friday and Saturday and Nov. 17 through Nov. 19. All shows begin at 7.

The musical, based on Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” doesn’t just include the talent of Ferris drama students; the cast also includes students from Adams, Cataldo, Sacajawea, Jefferson, Hamblen, Moran Prairie, Odyssey, Southside Christian, All Saints and Lincoln Heights primary schools.

The show tells a story of Oliver Twist, who is sold to an undertaker after asking for more dinner at an orphanage. Oliver runs away to London, where he meets up with Fagin and his gang of child pickpockets and is arrested for looking guilty. Oliver later finds his confidence when he meets Nancy and Bet, two members of Fagin’s gang. The classic tale turned beloved musical includes “Food, Glorious Food,” “Consider Yourself,” “I’d Do Anything,” and “Pick a Pocket or Two.”

The cast includes Sacajawea seventh-grader AJ Skipper, as Oliver; Nathan Seppi, as The Artful Dodger; Collin Skipper, as Fagin; Dan Gibson, as Bill Sykes; Alexandra Greer, as Nancy; and Annsley Bueler, as Bet.
