Chiefs drop another road game

PORTLAND – Sven Bartschi scored 30 seconds into overtime and the Portland Winterhawks kept the Spokane Chiefs winless on the road this season with a 4-3 victory in Western Hockey League play on Saturday.

Spokane (9-4-1-2, 21 points), in third place in the U.S. Division of the Western Conference, fell to 0-3-1-2 away from home. The Chiefs trail second-place Portland (13-7-1-1) by seven points. Tri-City leads the division with 30 points.

The Chiefs yielded a season-high 51 shots on goal with goalie Mac Engel stopping 47 on the night.

The Winterhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on a Brad Ross power-play goal at the 15:43 mark and a Ty Rattie score just 23 seconds later.

Darren Kramer put the Chiefs on the scoreboard at 7:11 in the second period with his ninth goal of the season.

Portland stretched its lead to 3-1 a little more than 2 minutes later on Rattie’s goal with a man advantage.

The Chiefs battled back to knot the score at 3-all with a pair of third-period goals.

Brenden Kichton’s second goal of the season came at the 5:20 mark and Collin Valcourt pulled Spokane even 1:37 later with his fourth netter of the season.

Spokane faces Kamloops at 7:05 p.m. Friday to begin a three-game homestand.

• Zak Kroll scored a pair of goals and Uriah Machuga’s unassisted netter with 5:31 remaining to play helped the visiting Spokane Braves earn a 5-5 tie with the Osoyoos Coyotes in KIJHL action.
