In brief: WSU wins, No. 2 Virginia next

Soccer: The Washington State women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament Saturday with a shooutout victory over Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.

Up next for the Cougars is second- ranked Virginia, a 2-0 winner over Long Island. The game will be played Friday at 4 p.m. PDT in Charlottesville, Va. The two teams played to a scoreless draw in September.

The Cougars (13-6-3) tied Saturday’s match at 1-all on Ali Fenter’s goal in the 57th minute. Fenter took a cross from Rachael Doyle following a set piece.

After two scoreless overtime periods the Cougars won the shootout 4-2. Jocelyn Jeffers and Jaquelyn Roth scored the first two penalty kicks, while the Wildcats (13-8-1) missed both of theirs. After a Cougar miss, Bethanie Skelton and Mesa Owsley connected to secure the victory.

Kentucky scored its goal in the first half when the Cougars were called for a handball in the box and the Wildcats’ Kelsey Hunyadi put in the penalty kick in the 41st minute.

A trio of champions

Here is a rundown of Saturday’s high school postseason action:

Volleyball: Colville (1A), Reardan (2B) and Tekoa- Oakesdale (1B) all claimed state volleyball titles within minutes of each on the floor of the Yakima SunDome. Mt. Spokane took fourth in 3A and Pullman sixth in 2A. For the first time since 1998 Mead failed to bring home a trophy, while state first-timer Central Valley also came home without a trophy.
