In brief: Donations sought for troops during appreciation month

SPOKANE VALLEY – Harley Davidson Motor Co. and the USO will celebrate Military Appreciation Month nationwide and locally, people can show their support by visiting Harley Davidson, 19011 E. Cataldo Ave.

River Park Square tree lighting ceremony Friday

RIVERSIDE – River Park Square will light up downtown Spokane for the holidays with the annual tree lighting ceremony on Friday at 7 p.m. Santa Claus will be there to help light the 50-foot tree with more than 10,000 LED lights.

The event will include face-painting, hot chocolate and candy canes. Elf hats and bells will be handed out to families who are downtown early, waiting in anticipation of the Christmas fun to begin. The pre-Santa festivities begin at 6:30 p.m.

Sheriff’s office and police will square off in hockey

RIVERSIDE – The third annual Spokane County Sheriff’s Office vs. Spokane Police Department charity hockey game will be at the Arena, 720 W. Mallon Ave., on Saturday at 5 p.m. before the Spokane Chiefs game at 7.

The benefit is held in honor of officers injured or lost in the line of duty.

Santa Express will open for Behan crisis nursery

RIVERSIDE – Children will have an opportunity to begin their holiday shopping when Santa Express, on the skywalk level of the Crescent building, opens on Wednesday. The store, created especially for little shoppers, will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., through Dec. 23.

Volunteers will help children, 4 to 12, choose gifts for everyone on their list and wrap each gift, making it ready to go under the tree. Gifts are priced from 50 cents to $8. Shoppers of all ages can find special gifts and stocking stuffers at Vanessa’s Village, located in the entry of Santa Express.

Proceeds from the store benefit the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery. Each year, the goal of Santa Express is to raise funds to support the efforts of Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery.

Program sends holiday cards from kids to troops

LINCOLN HEIGHTS AND EMERSON/GARFIELD – South Hill Pediatric Dentistry, 2020 E. 29th Ave., has joined with the Red Cross for the upcoming Christmas season in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.

Now through Dec. 9, children can drop off homemade cards, made especially for our troops, at the South Hill dentist office. For more information, call (509) 315-8500.

On Nov. 29, the Red Cross will have a card making party for the Holiday Mail for Heroes program. Supplies and refreshments will be provided. On Dec. 14, the Red Cross will have a card sorting party. Both events will be held at 315 W. Nora Ave., from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
