‘Pirates’ finale released on DVD

Philadelphia Inquirer

Available this week on DVD

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”: Somewhat more buoyant than its two immediate predecessors, the fourth installment in Disney’s billions-o’-doubloons franchise finds Johnny Depp teamed with Penelope Cruz in a quest for the Fountain of Youth. Geoffrey Rush is back as Jack Sparrow’s rival, and a school of CG mermaids bring early Victoria’s Secret action to the proceedings. (2:17, PG-13 for for intense sequences of action/adventure violence, some frightening images, sensuality and innuendo) • • ½

“Larry Crowne”: Tom Hanks stars in (and directs) this recession-era rom-com about a guy who loses his job and enrolls in community college, where he gets befriended by an impossibly sunny scooter girl and then falls for his speech teacher (Julia Roberts). Too cute for its own good, this upbeat take on downbeat times is nonetheless hard to dislike. (1:39, for brief strong language and some sexual content) • • ½

“Beginners”: Mike Mills’ captivating film centers on a melancholy young man (Ewan McGregor) both damaged and inspired by his vivacious father (Christopher Plummer) who comes out of the closet at 75. (1:44, R for language and some sexual content) • • •

“The Lion King”: When he is tricked into thinking that he is responsible for his father’s death, lion cub Simba runs away. It’s only later, after making new friends, that he comes to his senses. He realizes then that he must return and face his father’s killer and claim his rightful throne. (Newly released in two-, four- and eight-disc DVD/Blu-ray special editions.) (1:27, G) • • • •
