Area roundup: WAC honors UI’s Buchanan

Idaho’s Debbie Buchanan was named coach of the year at the Western Athletic Conference’s volleyball awards banquet Sunday in Las Vegas.

The Vandals’ Allison Walker and Alicia Milo earned first-team all-WAC honors. Cassie Hamilton, Jenny Feicht and Alex Sele were named to the second team, and Alyssa Schultz earned all-freshman team recognition.

Buchanan led Idaho to a 16-11 overall record, a 10-4 record in WAC play and the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves got goals from eight different players in an 8-4 victory over the Grand Forks Border Bruins in KIJHL play Sunday at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Nick Redding had a goal and three assists for the Braves (10-13-1).

Brycen Fisher, Matt Thurston, Uriah Machuga, Thomas McNevin, Dylan Solberg, Alex Marmon and Mitch Fowler also scored for Spokane.

Wrestling

Local wrestlers placed in the Spokane Open college wrestling tournament Sunday. Anthony Varnell (Lewis and Clark) of University of Great Falls placed first at 141 pounds. Great Falls’ Noah Hatton (Mt. Spokane) placed third at 165 pounds and North Idaho College’s Jake Mason (University) placed sixth at 174 pounds.
