In brief: Thornton’s 3s guide Duke over Jayhawks

Men’s basketball: Tyler Thornton hit an off-balance 3-pointer with 20 seconds left, his second in the closing minute, to lift No. 6 Duke to a 68-61 victory over No. 14 Kansas for its fifth Maui Invitational title Wednesday night at Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Blue Devils and Jayhawks traded leads 16 times in a battle of basketball behemoths before Thornton unleashed his pair of 3s – the first with 1:10 left, the second with the shot clock winding down.

Duke (7-0) ran its record at the Maui Invitational to 15-0. Mason Plumlee had 17 points and 12 rebounds and Ryan Kelly added 17 points.

Kansas (4-1) counterpunched with Duke until the end. Thomas Robinson had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Kansas.

Michigan drops UCLA: Zack Novak scored a career-high 22 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. added 20 and No. 15 Michigan (5-1) rolled over UCLA (1-4) 79-63 for third place in the Maui Invitational.

Georgetown tops No. 8 Memphis: Jason Clark hit a big 3-pointer in overtime and scored 26 points, helping Georgetown (4-1) hold off No. 8 Memphis (2-2) 91-88 in the fifth-place game of the Maui Invitational.

Aztecs end Arizona’s home streak: Chase Tapley scored 17 points, San Diego State (6-1) bolted to a 17-point lead and the Aztecs never trailed in a 61-57 victory over No. 23 Arizona (4-2) at Tucson, Ariz., that broke the Wildcats’ 22-game home winning streak.

Syracuse will meet Stanford for title: C.J. Fair and Dion Waters combined for 21 points in the second half and No. 5 Syracuse (5-0) pulled away for a 69-58 victory over Virginia Tech (3-1) in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The Orange (5-0) will play Stanford in the championship game Friday night.

Red Wings make break in third period

NHL: Pavel Datsyuk and Valtteri Filppula scored 1:14 apart late in the third period to break a tie and give the host Detroit Red Wings a 5-3 win over Calgary.

Blues win late in OT: Alex Pietrangelo beat Marc-Andre Fleury with less than a minute to go in overtime to lift the St. Louis Blues past the host Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.

Halman memorial scheduled for Sunday

Baseball: A public memorial service is to be held Sunday in the Netherlands for slain Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman.

Halman, 24, stabbed to death early Monday morning in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, will be buried Tuesday in the town of Driehuis, a few miles outside his hometown of Haarlem.

Halman’s brother, Jason, 22, was arrested in his brother’s stabbing.

Reports have suggested a quarrel over loud music might have sparked the altercation that led to Halman’s death.

Three stars offered arbitration: Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Jose Reyes were offered salary arbitration, guaranteeing their teams two extra draft picks next year if they sign with new clubs.

Teams offered 26 players arbitration, of which six were Type A free agents. A new club signing one of those premier players would lose a top pick in June’s amateur draft, and a team that offers arbitration and loses one of those players would get two extra selections as compensation.

Doumit, Twins agree to terms: The Minnesota Twins reached a $3 million, one-year deal with former Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit.

The 30-year-old Doumit, of Moses Lake, hit .303 with eight homers and 30 RBIs last season.

NBA talks resume in low-key fashion

NBA: Talks aimed at ending the NBA lockout resumed, two people with knowledge of the situation said, with a quick settlement necessary to start the season by Christmas.

The discussions began quietly Tuesday in New York and are expected to continue through the Thanksgiving holiday.

Ferrer dispatches Djokovic in London

Miscellany: David Ferrer’s relentless hitting proved too much for Novak Djokovic, giving the Spaniard a 6-3, 6-1 win and a spot in the semifinals of the ATP World Tour Finals at London.

Djokovic lost for only the fifth time in a season in which he has won three Grand Slam championships.

Indy 500 winner dies: Jim Rathmann, the 1960 Indianapolis 500 winner, has died. He was 83.

Son Jimmy Rathmann told Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials that his father died Wednesday at a hospice facility in Melbourne, Fla., nine days after having a seizure.
