Stomping Suh gets the boot

Ndamukong Suh was ejected from Detroit’s game against Green Bay on Thursday after he appeared to step on an opposing offensive lineman.

Suh was ejected early in the third quarter after the Lions thought they’d stopped the Packers on third down near the Detroit goal line. A replay showed Suh and Green Bay’s Evan Dietrich-Smith scuffling on the ground briefly before the All-Pro defensive tackle got up and appeared to stomp at Dietrich-Smith’s upper right arm.

Green Bay took advantage of the penalty, scoring a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead. The Packers had a player ejected in the first half, when Pat Lee appeared to take a swing at a Detroit player while covering a punt.

In less than two seasons as a pro, Suh, a 6-foot-4, 307-pounder, has established himself as one of the game’s strongest and most athletic defensive linemen, but he’s also received his share of fines.

With Vick uncertain, Young may start again

Michael Vick sat out practice again, another sign that Vince Young will get his second start in a row at quarterback when the Eagles host the Patriots on Sunday.

Vick told reporters after practice that he was “good” and that his two broken ribs were “getting better.”

Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said before practice that Vick did some light throwing on Wednesday. He was scheduled to throw some on Thursday.

“He’s day to day.” Mornhinweg said.

• Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, one of Philadelphia’s celebrated free agency acquisitions, injured his left knee during practice and was taken off the field on a cart. The Eagles had no comment on the extent of the injury and a team spokesman said Asomugha’s status would be updated today.

Quarterback McCown has first workout with Bears

New Chicago Bears quarterback Josh McCown worked out with the team for the first time just hours after agreeing to a one-year contract as a backup quarterback following last Sunday’s injury to starter Jay Cutler.

Wearing a No. 15 orange jersey, McCown alternated with new Bears’ starter Caleb Hanie and rookie reserve Nathan Enderle (University of Idaho) during offensive drills.

McCown spent 2010 with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League, was cut by the 49ers prior to the 2011 season and most recently coached quarterbacks at a North Carolina high school.

• Bears general manager Jerry Angelo says Cutler will have surgery Wednesday to repair the fractured thumb on his right throwing hand.

Angelo said on NFL.com Tuesday that team doctors hope Cutler will return before the end of the regular season and that the Bears are “anticipating a good result.”

Titans’ Hayes fined for hit on Falcons’ Ryan

The NFL has fined Titans defensive end William Hayes $15,000 for a hit on Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan, a punishment he plans to appeal.

Hayes said he was fined for putting too much weight on the quarterback as he hit Ryan. Hayes says he fell to Ryan’s side as he hit him trying to avoid just that.
