In brief: Soccer tournament open to small teams

SPOKANE VALLEY – Soccer players can have some holiday fun in the first Kringle Classic, to be held Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 at Mountain View Middle School, 6011 N. Chase Road in Newman Lake.

The Futsal soccer tournament is for boys and girls, in age categories U5/6, U7/8, U9/10, U11/12, U13/14, and U15 and older. Teams will consist of three to five players with no goalie and will be guaranteed a three-game minimum.

Cost is $75 per team.

Millwood tree lighting Friday features Santa

MILLWOOD – Join the city of Millwood for the fifth annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the Inland Empire Paper Co., 3320 N. Argonne Road.

The community event includes Santa handing out candy canes, Company Ballet performing a short routine, and performances by the Millwood Presbyterian choral group and the West Valley High School band.  Millwood Mayor Dan Mork will be the master of ceremonies. Liberty Lake kicks off season with festival

Liberty Lake – The city of Liberty Lake will present Winter Festival 2011 on Thursday.

Most events begin at 5 p.m. There will be carriage rides and hay rides, chestnut roasting, crafts, a food drive, games, music, pictures with Santa, a scavenger hunt, sledding if weather permits, story times and vendors. The tree lighting ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Children wishing to send Santa a letter with their Christmas wishes can drop them off at City Hall, 22710 E. Country Vista Drive.

The mailbox will be open Monday through Dec. 16. Children are encouraged to write to Santa and look for a response in the mail.
