Lions will finish season with Best

Jahvid Best’s season is over, leaving the Detroit Lions to try to piece together an effective running game without their leading rusher.

Best has been bothered by concussion problems and hasn’t played since Oct. 16, when the Lions lost to San Francisco. After starting 5-0, Detroit has lost four of six, beginning with that game against the 49ers.

The team says the move is expected to become official next week.

Best started the first six games of this season, running for 390 yards on 84 carries. Coach Jim Schwartz said Best started experiencing “concussion-like symptoms” after the loss to San Francisco.

Orton likely to sit

Kyle Orton will have the opportunity to compete for the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback job, though in all likelihood it’ll be after Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chiefs coach Todd Haley acknowledged Orton joined the team Friday after getting picked up off waivers from Denver on Wednesday.

Orton probably won’t have a chance to absorb much of the playbook before the game against the Steelers. Tyler Palko will get his second consecutive start in place of injured Matt Cassel.

Vick throws, but still questionable

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick threw for a second straight day, but did not take part in any practice drills.

Vick, bothered by broken ribs, is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with the New England Patriots.

Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (hamstring), cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (knee) and backup offensive lineman King Dunlap (concussion) could also miss Sunday’s game.
