PORTLAND – The seventh time wasn’t a charm for the Spokane Chiefs on Friday night. It turns out, neither was the third.
After twice overcoming deficits to draw even with the Portland Winterhawks, the Chiefs couldn’t dig themselves out of a third hole.
The result was a 5-3 loss that left them winless in seven Western Hockey League road games. Three have come in Portland.
Anthony Bardaro scored twice for Spokane, his 12th and 13th of the season. The first made it 1-1 early in the second period. The second, on a power play, came after defensive breakdowns led to two Portland goals 1:18 apart.
Connor Chartier’s fourth career goal – the third in Portland – evened the game 1:34 into the third period. But Joe Morrow broke the tie 59 seconds later and Brendan Leipsic iced it with 2:15 left. The Chiefs pulled goalie Mac Engel the last 2 minutes.
