Fined St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he deserved to be fined for criticizing an umpire in a televised interview during a playoff game. Major League Baseball fined La Russa an undisclosed amount for his remarks Sunday night. Early in the game against Philadelphia, La Russa told TBS that plate umpire Jerry Meals had “two different strike zones,” prefacing his remarks that he knew there might be disciplinary action.

Killed Houston Astros prospect Dustin Kellogg was killed in an automobile accident late Monday night. Kellogg died when the pickup truck he was driving collided with a freight truck in suburban Houston, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The 18-year-old pitcher was picked by the Astros in the 34th round of this year’s amateur draft.

Extended The Chicago Blackhawks gave Stan Bowman a three-year contract extension through the 2015-16 season, rewarding the youngest general manager in the NHL with more opportunities to bring home another Stanley Cup. Bowman, 38, is entering his 11th season with the Blackhawks and third as the head of team operations.

Signed Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko signed a three-year contract with Russia’s CSKA team that he can terminate if the NBA lockout ends. Kirilenko grew up in Russia but gained dual citizenship recently, and said the money he earns in Russia will go to his Kirilenko’s Kids charity

Arrested Houston Astros outfielder Jordan Schafer was arrested in Tampa, Fla., and charged with felony possession of marijuana. He was arrested early Tuesday morning after a traffic stop and was released on a $2,000 cash bond. It wasn’t clear if he had an attorney.

Released Turner Motorsports released Nationwide Series championship contender Reed Sorenson, and said it has advised employees the team might downsize at the end of the season. The team said sponsor Dollar General informed the organization it will not return next season.
