SCC student reports on-campus rape

By The Spokesman-Review

A Spokane Community College student reported to campus security today that she was raped in a car in a campus parking lot at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Spokane police are investigating. The woman did not know the man, authorities said, and the suspect remains at large.

“As soon as she told us about it, we started working on an alert to let every one know to be aware,” said Anne Tucker, a college spokeswoman. “That’s the most important thing, so people can be on the look out.”

The rape occurred in the large parking lot between the clock tower and fire science tower (P-17) in a vehicle described as an early 2000s or late 1990s silver four-door Acura.

The rapist is reported to be a white male in his early 20s with blond hair and a skinny build. He is approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Anyone with information about the rape is asked to call Crime Check, (509) 456-2233.

Because my Partner Mary works on the SCC Campus as the Dean of Library and Media services I have a connection to the campus.
I am sorry this happened… and it happened in broad daylight in a parking lot that more often than not is teeming with cars coming and going….That lot is lock stock full from early in the morning til mid day, with people driving about frantically looking for a spot to park and get to class. Folks are in a hurry… so this could have happened without anyone noticing until it was over… but it might have also “been ignored”… by people afraid to act on behalf of the woman who was raped. I am remembering things like the Central Park Rape years ago as a touch point. Not many are willing these days to put their life at risk to save another from a grievous act like this.

I did receive an “Alert” text on my cell phone at 10:34 Spokane time apprising me of the event… and asking for information… so all of the students who might have been on campus, and who have that alert system sending to their cell phones got the message and there may be more information on this as it goes along. I pray so. and I Pray for the young woman who was raped. A very sad life changing experience. John
