Cheney girls soccer continues on tear

The Cheney girls soccer team began the season 0-4, including a 7-1 loss to West Valley to open the Great Northern League season.

The Blackhawks have been nothing but golden since, including Thursday’s 3-2 win over WV that gave Cheney (6-4, 6-1) its sixth consecutive win.

Alexa Shaw began the winning play with a direct kick that went to Chae Brown, who had scored the match’s first goal at 29 minutes. Brown found Briana Estrellado on the back side for a 3-yard shot at 61 minutes.

Estrellado also scored at 53 minutes for a 2-1 edge that held up for 1 minute, when Brittni Mauro of the Eagles (6-3, 4-3) scored off a direct kick.

Cheney has outscored rivals 22-5 during its streak.

Also in the GNL, Laura DeWald finished with two goals and two assists as Pullman (8-3, 5-1) kept on Cheney’s heels with a 5-1 home win over Deer Park. The Stags (3-7, 1-6) led 1-0 through most of the first half on Allison Ruygrok’s score. DeWald tied the match in the 36th minute and started the tiebreaking goal 1 minute later by passing to Bre Daugherty, who fed Becky Birchett for the tap-in. … Samantha Hilfiker opened the scoring at 30 minutes with a shot from outside the box, and Brittnee Barbieri scored her first of two goals 2 minutes later to charge East Valley (6-5, 5-2) toward a 5-0 win at Medical Lake (0-9, 0-7). Barbieri got behind the defense and beat the goalkeeper 1-on-1 for her first score.

• Team scoring leaders Meaghan Bare and Taylor Hoffman scored off assists from Nikki Webster to give Lake City (4-3-3, 2-1-2) a 2-0 win over visiting Lewiston (4-4, 2-3) in Inland Empire League 5A play. Brittany Amburn earned the shutout, the Timberwolves’ third straight. … Kelcie Hedge scored first-half goals 5 minutes apart to give Post Falls (4-2-2, 1-1-2) a 2-0 victory over visiting Coeur d’Alene (3-6-1, 2-2).

Volleyball

Sequoia Lofton had 13 kills and Aaliyah Ashley-Meek added 27 assists and two aces as West Valley (4-3) knocked Cheney (5-2) out of a tie for first place in the GNL with a road sweep. Cheney had opened the league season with a sweep at WV. … Pullman (6-1) took advantage of a night off by Clarkston (5-1) to move into first place alone with a sweep of visiting Deer Park. Jenny Nakata had 17 kills for the Greyhounds, while Camille Davis added 36 assists, four aces and two blocks. Kimmie Brazington led the Stags (2-5) with five kills, four digs and 12 blocks. … Brooklyn Bellomy had a match-high 14 kills and Callie Hanson led all players with 28 assists as East Valley (2-5) recorded a sweep at Medical Lake. Jessica Baier had 10 digs for the Cardinals (0-7).

• Kaylie Curtis had 16 kills as Lake City (2-1) forged a sweep of Lewiston (2-3) in an IEL 5A match.

• Kelly Madsen had a match-high 12 kills while carrying Timberlake (4-3) into second place in the Intermountain League with a 3-1 win over visiting Priest River (3-3) at Spirit Lake.

Boys soccer

Lake City’s IEL 5A match at Post Falls was rescheduled for Saturday.
