Gaels blow past Zags

Jordan Shaw and Samantha Tinsley combined for 23 kills Thursday night as Saint Mary’s (7-10, 1-4) escaped the West Coast Conference volleyball cellar with a sweep of Gonzaga at Moraga, Calif.

The Gaels hit .296 for the match while Gonzaga (6-10, 0-5) was held to .136, including .097 in the final game.

Natalie Loos had a hand in seven blocks as Saint Mary’s finished with an 11-5 edge.

Meredith Crenshaw had seven kills and Denise Van De Mortel 29 assists for the Zags, who dropped their sixth consecutive match.

• Yang Yang and Janele Vogt combined for 26 kills and eight blocks as North Idaho (14-7, 3-1 Scenic West Athletic Conference) won its fourth consecutive match, and six of seven, with a sweep of visiting Colorado Northwestern (3-13, 1-3).

The Cardinals moved into a first-place tie with Salt Lake and Southern Idaho.

NIC’s Dig Pink match, scheduled for Saturday against Utah State University-Eastern, has been postponed after the death of USU-Eastern men’s basketball coach Brad Barton on Tuesday.

The match has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. on Oct. 19.

NIC’s Dig Pink match, in which players wear pink and fans are asked to wear pink in honor of breast cancer awareness, will now be against Salt Lake at 1 p.m. Oct. 15 at Christianson Gym.
