Combat Vet Rider killed in crash

A three-motorcycle pileup during a ride by the Combat Vet Riders club killed a Post Falls man and injured three others on Saturday.

Rick Downs, 65, died at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center after crashing his bike on a gravel shoulder along Rock Lake Road near Dewey Road, about 15 miles northwest of St. John, according to the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office.

Harold Teufert, 64, and his passenger, Judy Teufert, of Newman Lake, suffered serious injuries after crashing on the gravel shoulder while trying to turn. Downs was following Teufert, authorities say.

Travis Lee, 29, who was following Downs, also crashed on the gravel shoulder and was taken to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane with a shoulder injury, the sheriff’s office said.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, which was reported at 11:35 a.m.
