NIC sweeps Sasquatch

Yang Yang, a 6-foot freshman, had 15 kills and six blocks to lead North Idaho College to a three-game nonconference volleyball sweep of visiting Community Colleges of Spokane on Monday night.

Sophomore Mariah Smith chipped in 13 digs and 10 kills as the Cardinals (16-7) won 25-19, 25-18, 25-21.

Sophomore Lindsay Bronkhorst had 20 digs and three Sasquatch players divided 18 kills as CCS slipped to 21-5.

• For the second time in her career, Idaho sophomore outside hitter Allison Walker is the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

As the Vandals posted back-to-back three-set wins over Eastern Washington and Utah State last week, Walker extended her double-double streak to six matches with a season-high 24 kills and a career-best 17 digs at EWU and 16 kills and 12 digs against defending WAC tournament champion Utah State.

The Spokane Chiefs sent 18-year-old rookie goalie Zach Rakochy to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, giving the backup job to Luke Lee-Knight, acquired in a preseason trade with Prince Albert.

Rakochy, who will play for the Melville Millionaires, played in one game for the Chiefs, 2-2-0-1 heading into Wednesday’s home game with Brandon. The move leaves the Chiefs with 24 players.

The Chiefs are also home Friday against Prince Albert and Saturday against Everett.

College golf

The host North Idaho College men and Whitworth women captured division titles at the North Idaho College Invitational that wound up a 36-hole run Monday at Avondale Golf Club.

Freshman Dylan Morrison shot a 2-over 146 to place third and lead the NIC No. 2 team to a 600 team total and four-shot win over Rocky Mountain. Rocky junior Casey Faught, playing unattached, was medalist with a 2-under 140.

Community Colleges of Spokane was third at 607 with sophomore Dylan Maine (Freeman) the individual runner-up at 145.

In the women’s event, Whitworth, led by junior Emily Guthrie’s 163 for third, posted a 13-stroke win over Rocky Mountain, 672-685. Rocky’s Rachel Hosterman was medalist with a 159.

Girls soccer

A goal in the last minute gave Sandpoint a 3-2 win over visiting Lakeland in the loser-out opener of the 4A Region I tournament and a date Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at No. 1 seed Moscow.

Darby Murray scored both Lakeland goals.
