Lake City, Post Falls boys soccer make state

Kenny Randall’s free kick to Vincent Cavalin during the second minute of stoppage time Tuesday turned into the goal that sent Lake City’s boys soccer team to state.

Randall one-timed a pass across the net to Cavalin, who scored for a 1-0 victory at Coeur d’Alene (10-5-1) on a slick field during the loser-out opener of the 5A Region I tournament.

The Timberwolves (7-5-1) split their league matches with CdA. Now LC will play at top-seeded Post Falls at 2 p.m. Saturday for state seeding.

In the other regional match, Timmy Mueller had two goals and one assist, giving him 21 goals and eight assists on the season, as Post Falls (8-0-1) cruised to a 6-0 win over visiting Lewiston (1-9). Cole Jesinouski added two goals, and defenders Tyler Flock and Brady Ulen closed out the scoring for the Trojans, who just tied with LC on Saturday.

• Colton Grytness scored twice and Alex Opland set up the first two goals in Lakeland’s 3-2 win at Moscow (3-6-1) in 4A Region I loser-out play. The Hawks (7-4-1) will play at Sandpoint at 3:30 p.m. Thursday for a state berth.

Volleyball

Sophomore Paiton Larson had 36 assists to help Mt. Spokane (6-1) hold on to second place in the Greater Spokane League with a 21-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 15-7 win over visiting Central Valley. Mikayla Ness of the Bears (4-3) had five blocks and 20 kills, one more than the Wildcats’ Kennadie Clute. Ixchelle Oleson added 19 digs for Mt. Spokane.

Also in the GSL, Mead (7-0) moved closer to the league title as Morgan Douglass had nine digs and three aces in a sweep of visiting University (3-4). … Khou Moua had 16 digs and five aces as visiting Lewis and Clark (2-5) surprised Shadle Park (3-4) with a sweep. … Sam Hill’s 11 kills, four blocks and three aces helped North Central (4-3) move into a tie for fourth place with a sweep of visiting Rogers (1-6). … Megan Steilen had seven blocks as Gonzaga Prep (5-2) moved up to third place with a sweep at Ferris (0-7).

• Sequoia Lofton had 18 kills, and Latasha Lofton added 10 kills and five blocks as host West Valley (5-3) swept to knock Clarkston (5-2) into a second-place tie with idle Cheney in the Great Northern League. The Eagles won the third game 29-27 after trailing 20-11. … Also in the GNL, Camille Davis served 14 consecutive points, including eight of her nine aces, and Brittani Harvey had 17 kills and nine digs to guide Pullman (7-1) to a sweep over visiting East Valley (2-6). … Kimmie Brazington accounted for nine kills and 17 digs to lead host Deer Park (3-5) to a sweep of Medical Lake (0-8).

• Marlee Masterson totaled 14 kills and Jaylee Sines had 31 assists as St. Maries (6-0) clinched the Intermountain League title with a sweep of visiting Timberlake (4-4). The Lumberjacks will have the No. 1 seed to the 3A District I tournament, which begins Oct. 22 at Lakeland High in Rathdrum. … Also in the IML, Melissa Trost had 10 kills and five aces, and Taryn Eldore added 21 assists as Priest River (4-3) moved up to second place with a 3-1 win over visiting Kellogg (2-4).

Girls soccer

Laura DeWald scored at 6 minutes and Dakota Wickard made it hold up with seven saves as Pullman (9-3, 6-1) moved into a first-place tie with idle Cheney after a 1-0 Great Northern League win over visiting East Valley (6-6, 5-3). Pullman has won four consecutive matches and hosts Cheney on Thursday. … Also in the league, Courtney Hossfeld’s cross-field pass set up Brittney Mauro’s first-minute goal, sparking West Valley (7-3, 5-3) toward a 4-0 home win over Clarkston (2-6, 2-4). Mauro set up Hossfeld’s score 6 minutes later, and added a goal off a penalty kick just before halftime. … Nichole Ball finished with three goals and one assist and Alison Ruygrok set up three goals as Deer Park (4-7, 2-6) posted a 9-0 win at Medical Lake (0-10, 0-8).

Arena football

Defensive lineman Jeremy Geathers, the Defensive Player of the Game for Spokane during the 2010 ArenaBowl, signed with the Shock for the 2012 season.

Geathers (6-foot-3, 255 pounds) was a late-season acquisition by the Chicago Rush last season.

The Shock also signed offensive lineman Sifa Etu, who was an all-conference player at Arkansas State.

College football

Whitworth senior Cailen Thomason was named Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week after intercepting two passes during Saturday’s home loss to Pacific Lutheran.
