Area roundup: Mortellaro ties for title, leads Idaho’s women to 2nd

Senior Kayla Mortellaro tied for first place Wednesday while leading Idaho’s women’s golf team to second place at the Price’s Give ’Em Five Intercollegiate at Las Cruces, N.M.

Mortellaro shot a third-round 1-under-par 71 to finish at 5-under 216, tied with Jaclyn Jansen of team champion Baylor. Vandals classmate Teo Poplawski finished one shot back, and freshman Leilanie Kim tied for sixth at 216.

Baylor, ranked No. 24, finished at 860 for a one-shot gap on Idaho.


Joni Nagy piled up 10 kills, 19 assists, three aces and 11 digs to guide Community Colleges of Spokane (22-5, 7-1) to a sweep of Big Bend (6-16, 1-7) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play at Spokane Falls CC.

Brigitte Lowe added 15 digs and nine kills while hitting .467 for the Sasquatch, who entered the night tied for first place in the East Division with Blue Mountain.

CCS will host its crossover tournament this weekend.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga played its third overtime home match in six days, finishing in a 1-all tie with Portland (5-6-2, 0-4-1) in West Coast Conference play that went double overtime.

Nick Hamer set up Clark Phillips’ goal in the 53rd minute for the Bulldogs (4-6-2, 2-2-1), who moved into a third-place tie with San Diego.

Steven Evans’ goal on a penalty kick in the 75th minute allowed the Pilots to send the match into OT. Josh Phillips’ foul in the box set up the play.

• Matt Harper scored an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute to give CC of Spokane (5-3-5, 5-0-2 NWAACC) a 1-0 win over visiting Wenatchee Valley (2-8-2, 0-6-1) at Spokane Falls CC.

The Sasquatch, who haven’t lost since Sept. 12, are two points behind first-place Walla Walla in the East Division. CCS hosts Walla Walla on Saturday.

Women’s soccer

Mackenzie Grow fed Chelsea Schooler for the winning goal in the 53rd minute as Whitworth (5-4-2, 5-2-2) turned back visiting Whitman (4-8, 3-6) in Northwest Conference play.

The scoring came in bunches as Whitworth’s Chloe Cook gathered in a deflection of her shot and scored in the 50th minute, and the Missionaries’ Marisa Poorboy tied the match at 51:50.

• Alli Floyd and Dee Dee Garbe combined for five goals and four assists as CC Spokane (11-1, 8-0 NWAACC) blasted Wenatchee Valley (2-9, 1-7) 12-0 at SFCC to stay tied for first place in the East Division.

Nikki Caudill and Kendra Johnson added two goals apiece for the Sasquatch, who will host East co-leader Walla Walla on Saturday.
