Cougars, Bruins play to scoreless tie in soccer

The 24th-ranked Washington State women’s soccer team turned up the defensive intensity and remained in second place in the Pac-12 Conference standings with a scoreless draw against No. 4 UCLA Friday in Pullman.

The Bruins (10-1-3, 3-1-2) pressured the Cougars (10-4-2, 4-1-1) for most of the match, firing 29 shots, including 15 in the second half. Washington State goalkeeper Gurveen Clair preserved the shutout.

Washington State will play the first of five matches away from Pullman on Friday at Oregon State.

• Idaho’s Chelsea Small scored in the 81st minute, but New Mexico State responded 5 minutes later as the Vandals and Aggies (8-6-2, 1-2-1) played to a 1-1 draw in a Western Athletic Conference match in Las Cruces, N.M.

Idaho (5-8-3, 1-2-1) plays at Louisiana Tech on Sunday.

• Carissa Christensen had a goal and an assist to lead North Idaho (12-0-1) to a 2-0 win over Laramie (12-4-2) in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Christensen assisted on Demi Wignot’s goal at 9 minutes and scored in the 51st minute.

The Cardinals will stay in Cheyenne to take on Colorado’s club team today.

• Elizabeth Eddy’s goal in the fifth minute gave Southern California (4-11, 1-5) a 1-0 Pac-12 Conference win over Washington (6-6-3, 2-3-1) in Seattle.

Volleyball

Ka’ipo Rocha set a Whitworth single-match record with 13 blocks to lead the Pirates to a 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13 come-from-behind victory over George Fox (7-11, 2-7) in a Northwest Conference match in Newberg, Ore.

The Pirates had 19 team blocks, also a school record.

Kaimi Rocha added 17 kills and 20 digs for Whitworth (13-5, 8-1), which plays at Pacific tonight.

• Rachel Williams had 13 kills and nine digs as No. 7 Stanford (13-3, 7-3) routed Washington State 25-13, 25-21, 25-6 in a Pac-12 Conference match in Stanford, Calif.

Meagan Ganzer had 10 kills and eight digs for WSU (11-8, 3-6), which plays at No. 4 California tonight.

• Tarah Murrey led three players in double figures with 21 kills and California (16-1, 8-1) beat Washington (17-3, 7-3) 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 27-25 in a Pac-12 Conference match in Berkeley, Calif.

• Kate Hart had 15 kills and Joni Nagy had 22 assists and 14 digs to guide Community Colleges of Spokane to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-27 win over Highline at the CCS Crossover Tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

The Sasquatch, who beat Whatcom 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 earlier in the day, play Whatcom again at 9 a.m. today.

Men’s soccer

Justin Howard scored twice to guide Saint Mary’s (4-3-5, 3-0-2) to a 3-0 West Coast Conference win over Gonzaga (4-7-2, 2-3-1) in Moraga, Calif.

The Bulldogs’ next match is at Portland on Oct. 26.

• Casey McCool and Jacob Hustedt scored to lead Washington (7-3-2, 2-2) to a 2-0 Pac-12 Conference win over Stanford (3-7-2, 0-3-1) in Stanford, Calif.

Cross country

The Washington State men took first place while Gonzaga earned the title in the women’s race at the Inland Northwest Cross Country Classic at Spokane Falls Community College.

Andrew Kimpel led the way for the WSU men, winning the 8,000-meter race in 24 minutes, 0.2 seconds. Kimpel’s teammate, Jono Lafler, was second in 24:01.4.

Gonzaga’s Lindsey Drake was the women’s champion. Drake finished the 5,000-meter course in 17:17.3. Eastern Washington’s Tonya Turner was fourth (17:19.1) and Gonzaga’s Emily Thomas was fifth (17:23.5).

Arena football

Defensive linemen Anthony Hoke, Ayanga Okpokuwuruk and Steven Friday were signed by the Spokane Shock.

Hoke spent the last two seasons as a member of the Cleveland Gladiators. He broke Cleveland’s single-season sack record in 2010 with 7.5 and matched that number last season.

Okpokuwuruk played in six games last year with Spokane, and Friday is entering his first season in the Arena Football League.

Junior hockey

Beaver Valley (8-2) scored two first-period goals and beat Spokane (3-8) 3-1 in a KIJHL contest at Eagles Ice-A-Rena. Alex Marmon scored the Braves’ lone goal in the third period.

Girls soccer

Shadle Park made one extra shootout goal and upset host Mead (9-3, 4-3) 2-1 in a Greater Spokane League match. The Highlanders (5-7, 2-5), who had just one league win prior to the match, got an 18th-minute goal from Tiara Pajimola. The Panthers’ Kara Marbury knotted the match at 1 with a 35th-minute goal. … Elsewhere in the GSL, Sarah Nanny scored off an assist from Rose Kunkel in the fourth minute, giving Lewis and Clark a 1-0 win over host Central Valley (10-2, 6-1, 18 points). Sienna Tanner secured the shutout for the Tigers (12-2, 5-2, 15 points). … Gonzaga Prep (11-2, 6-1, 15 points) is tied for second place after a 1-0 shootout win over visiting Ferris (5-5, 3-4). The Saxons were limited to just one shot in the match. … Sydney Weiler scored a goal in each half as University (4-3, 4-3) blanked visiting North Central (2-8, 1-6) 4-0. … Mt. Spokane (7-4, 4-3) scored five first-half goals and cruised to a 7-1 victory over visiting Rogers (0-8, 0-7).
