Eagles fight back, beat Greyhounds in GNL volleyball thriller

Latasha Lofton had 18 digs and Courtney Wold added 18 assists, 13 digs and three aces as West Valley upset Pullman 13-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-18 in a Great Northern League volleyball thriller Saturday at West Valley.

Wold, usually the Eagles’ leading hitter, stepped into the setter role to cover for a teammate who didn’t play due to an illness.

Jolene Herzog had 30 assists, six kills and three aces, April Oviatt had 31 digs and Brittany Harvey had 21 digs and 14 kills to lead the Greyhounds.

West Valley improved to 6-3 and Pullman fell to 8-2.

Elsewhere in the GNL, Jamie Weisner had 11 kills, 13 digs and was 11-for-11 serving as Clarkston (7-2) cruised to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-11 win over visiting East Valley (3-7). Erin Wallman had nine kills and 13 digs to lead the Knights.

Girls soccer

Morgan Williams scored two first-half goals and West Valley (9-3, 6-3) edged visiting Pullman (10-4, 8-2) 2-1 in a Great Northern League match. Becky Birchett scored the Greyhounds’ lone goal. Neither team scored in the second half. … In other league matches, Chae Brown scored her team-leading 13th goal two minutes into the contest and Cheney (7-5, 7-2) cruised to a 3-1 win over visiting Deer Park (4-9, 2-8). … Hannah Bowermen scored the only goal of the match in the 12th minute and East Valley (8-6, 7-3) won 1-0 at Clarkston (3-7, 3-6).

Football

After a St. Paul (Ore.) touchdown tied the game late in the fourth quarter, Mitchell Hunt hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Derek Isaak with 58 seconds left to give host Almira/Coulee-Hartline a 40-32 nonleague win in Goldendale, Wash.

Isaak finished with three touchdown passes and a rushing score for the Warriors. Colin Deyarmin ran for 162 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries for Almira/Coulee-Hartline, which remained undefeated at 7-0.

The Warriors host winless Mansfield on Friday.

• Alex Bluff ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns to guide Cusick (5-2) to a 52-8 nonleague win at Republic (2-4). The Panthers scored 24 points in the second quarter to take a 30-0 halftime lead.
