Verner working for Spokane

I once thought there was little government could do to generate jobs and economic growth. I thought this could only be accomplished by the private sector. However, I’ve learned from Mary Verner how well-run local government can accomplish these goals.

As mayor, she has accelerated road, sewer and water construction projects, funded through existing bond revenues, to help keep employees of local private companies working at a time when construction was down. She completed the annexation of Airway Heights and pledged to provide services there to help bring Caterpillar Distribution (and more living wage jobs) to town.

She launched an efficiency effort at City Hall to streamline business permits and simplify processes for small businesses. She worked to advance development of a new recycling center that provides much-needed jobs and keeps our environmental protection efforts on track. She provided crucial leadership and support for development of the medical school, which is forecast to generate hundreds of long-term new jobs.

Given the extraordinarily difficult economic conditions our city is facing, I find this a solid demonstration of effective leadership. I’m confident in Mayor Verner’s ability to provide stable management and practical, visionary leadership for Spokane. She’s earned my vote!
