Area roundup: Small’s goal lifts Vandals

Junior forward Chelsea Small scored a goal in the seventh minute and Caroline Towles and Morgan Porter made it stand up as the Idaho Vandals (6-8-3, 2-2-1) pinned a 1-0 loss on Louisiana Tech (8-5-4, 1-3) in Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer action Sunday in Ruston, La.

Small’s goal was the 30th of her career. The scoring play came when Jill Flockhart took a pass from Bailey Hewitt and booted a cross to Small who headed it in the net from 10 yards out.

Towles, a junior, was stellar in goal, making three saves in the first 68 minutes. But Towles received a red card for handing a ball just outside the box at the 67:21 mark, setting the stage for Porter.

Porter, a freshman forward, took over in goal for the Vandals for the first time in her brief career. She immediately saved a free kick and minutes later cleared a corner kick to help preserve the victory.

• Whitworth goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom tallied eight saves and the Pirates (6-4-3, 6-2-3) and the Puget Sound Loggers (9-2-2, 7-1-2) played to a 0-0 tie through double overtime in Northwest Conference play in Tacoma.

Richards has nine goals this season.
