GSL football playoff spots remain up for grabs

Things could be clearer or could be just as muddied when Greater Spokane League football concludes the next-to-last week of play Friday.

Mead (6-1), Ferris (6-1) and Lewis and Clark (6-1), tied for first, would all go to the State 4A playoffs if things ended right now. Central Valley (5-2) and Gonzaga Prep (5-2) are also in the mix for one of the league’s three State 4A berths.

There are multiple scenarios and none of the co-leaders can earn a playoff berth with a win Friday. South Hill rivals LC and Ferris face off at Albi Stadium at 8. An hour earlier at G-Prep, Mead takes on the Bullpups, who need to upset the Panthers and do the same next week against Ferris to keep their hopes alive.

The two hottest teams in the league at the moment are LC and Mead.

LC has been the most balanced offensive team through seven weeks. Although Mead didn’t secure a playoff berth last week, the Panthers did themselves much good when they topped then No. 1-ranked Ferris, snapping the Saxons’ 20-game winning streak. It was Mead’s first win over Ferris since 2005. The Panthers had lost six straight to the Saxons, including twice in 2007.

• In an Albi doubleheader tonight, CV takes on North Central (2-5) at 4:45 followed at 7:15 by University (4-3) facing Shadle Park (0-7). In the other game Friday, Rogers (0-7) meets Mt. Spokane (1-6) in the early game at Albi.

• The final-week schedule has Ferris at G-Prep, U-Hi taking on Mead, CV going against LC and NC taking on Mt. Spokane in a game that will decide the final State 3A berth.

• In Idaho, a big showdown takes place Friday when Post Falls (6-1, 1-0) visits No. 1-ranked Coeur d’Alene (7-0, 1-0). Kickoff is at 7. The winner will likely capture the 5A Inland Empire League title.

CdA is heavily favored. In a season-opening, nonleague game against Lewiston, Post Falls won 29-15. CdA ran over Lewiston 69-7 last week.

• In the 4A IEL, Lakeland (5-3, 1-0) can capture the title and lone state playoff berth when Moscow (3-4, 0-0) visits at 7 p.m. Friday.
