Education Notes: Rogers Walk of Fame will add 5 honorees
Rogers High School will honor alumni on Oct. 28 when it inducts five new members into the Walk of Fame. Members of the Walk of Fame have given their high school a positive image by working hard, both personally and professionally, and giving back to their community. The inductees are:
Richard Anderson, Rogers graduate of the class of 1958. Anderson received a Bachelor of Science from Washington State University, a Master of Public Health from the University of California at Berkeley and completed the advanced management program at Harvard Business School. His career includes vice president of Kaiser Permanente’s corporate program for medical economics, marketing and health policy and commissioner of the Physician Payment Review Commission. Anderson’s community involvement includes chairman of the Oakland YMCA, director of the YMCA Indian Guides Program and raising funds for the YMCA’s new building in Oakland. He was awarded the Outstanding Service Award for the Greater Oakland YMCA for his work.
John Brownell (deceased), Rogers graduate of the class of 1938. Brownell received a Bachelor of Science from WSU and was assigned to the World War II secret project to develop jet engines. He was awarded Time Magazine’s Dealer of the Year for Washington state, as an automobile dealer. His community involvement included service in Rotary International, Board of Trustees for the Washington State Auto Dealers Insurance Trust and the Northwest Ford Dealers Advertising Association Board of Directors. In Walla Walla he served as director of the Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA, YWCA and the Fort Walla Walla Museum. He received a merit award from the National Highway Users Federation for Driving Training program support. Brownell’s induction will be accepted by his widow, Elaine Brownell.
Dr. Ashley Ulmer, Rogers graduate of the class of 1993. Ulmer’s continuing education includes general practice residency at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, advanced education in general dentistry at the Audie L. Murphy Veterans Affairs Hospital, doctor of dental surgery at the UW School of Dentistry, Bachelor of Arts from Eastern Washington University, and a senior year scholarship at Copernicus Gymnasium in Phillipsburg, Germany. Her community involvement includes Rogers football captain leadership training, student faculty assistant and student council treasurer for the University of Washington School of Dentistry, along with volunteering at church. She was awarded the Dr. William Kramer Award of Excellence from Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society at the UW School of Dentistry.
Dwight Wilson (deceased), Rogers graduate of the class of 1955. Wilson received a Bachelor of Science from WSU and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He was a fighter pilot for 26 years and served two combat tours in Southeast Asia where he flew 454 combat missions. His military decorations include two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 26 Air Medals, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Commendation Medals, the Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, and three Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbons, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device and a Vietnam Air Medal. He was a member of the Wimberley Lions Club and the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post. Wilson’s induction will be accepted by his sister, Carolyn Wattenburg.
Wayne Wright, Rogers graduate of the class of 1947. He received a bachelor’s from EWU and a master’s in education from Whitworth University. He served in the Army in South Korea where he earned the rank of colonel. He was an elementary and junior high school teacher in the Spokane Public Schools District. His community involvement includes president of Little League in Walla Walla, officer of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Walla Walla and Community Chest leader in Walla Walla. He has been honored for his work in Walla Walla Little League received the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department Leadership Award for working with youth, and inducted into the Inland Empire Hall of Fame for softball. Wright is a strong supporter of community events, including Bloomsday, the Turkey Trot and Hoopfest.
LC in running for ‘Glee’ grant
The Lewis and Clark High School Tiger Drama Musical Theatre department wants to bring “Glee” to their school.
LCHS’s drama department has been selected as a semifinalist in the “Glee” Give-a-Note grant competition, after submitting a musical video, vocalizing their wants and needs for their school productions.
Tiger fans can help LC’s drama students win up to $50,000 by voting for their video on the Give-a-Note website at www.gleegiveanote.com. Click on “Vote Now” and search for “Lewis and Clark High School.” The more votes that the LC Tigers get, the more the “Glee” producers know LC is what they want.
