Discharged California men’s basketball coach Mike Montgomery was discharged from the hospital Thursday after undergoing surgery Wednesday that will keep him away from the team for a short recovery period. The school provided no further details about the coach’s condition and asked for privacy on the matter.

Accused Skier Bode Miller lashed out at the international ski federation, accusing the governing body of “ruining our sport” because of new equipment regulations set to take effect next year. The 34-year-old American star called the FIS rule changes regarding minimum size and radius of skis “a complete joke. It’s going backwards every time they do a regulation.”

Awarded Boston’s David Ortiz won this year’s Roberto Clemente award, given annually to a major league player who gives back through community service and also excels on the field. Ortiz is the second straight Red Sox player to win the honor, announced before Game 2 of the World Series.

Abby Wambach was selected Sportswoman of the Year by the Women’s Sports Foundation on Wednesday night. Wambach led the U.S. with four goals at the World Cup in Germany, where the Americans lost to Japan on penalty kicks in the final.

Suspended The Big Ten suspended Michigan State defensive end William Gholston for Saturday’s game against No. 4 Wisconsin after he threw a punch at a Michigan player last weekend. Gholston was shown on video appearing to twist the helmet of Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson during a pileup. He was also shown taking a swing at a Michigan lineman on another play, appearing to connect with his face or neck.

Approved Boise State received permission to fatten the five-year contract of football coach Chris Petersen. The state Board of Education approved a series of tweaks to Petersen’s contract.

Died Tennis agent Ken Meyerson, who represented Grand Slam winners Andy Roddick, Chris Evert and Justine Henin, has died. He was 48. Meyerson died Wednesday night at his home in Florida, according to a statement by his agency, Lagardhre Unlimited. The cause of death was not immediately known.
