The tolls of war

Through Wednesday:

• In Iraq: At least 4,477 members of the U.S. military had died in the war since it began, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes nine civilians killed in action working for the military.

• In Afghanistan: At least 1,687 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of the country in late 2001.
