Out & About: Online vote boosts wolverine research

OUTCOMPETE – The Friends of the Scotchman Peaks Wilderness are asking people to vote online before Friday to help them garner nearly $30,000 in grants from Zoo Boise that would be applied to wolverine research in North Idaho.

Visit the Zoo Boise projects website ( tinyurl.com/zoovote) for details. Review the  wolverine proposal and the seven other finalists and then vote for two in each category.

The Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness has partnered with Idaho Fish and Game and the Idaho Conservation League on the proposal for an Idaho Panhandle Wolverine Study.

Wolverines (Gulo gulo) were recently classified as “warranted but precluded” for listing as a threatened species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Only about 35 breeding wolverine females are roaming the lower 48 states.

State checks report fewer deer hunters

OUTSHOOT – Apparently there was plenty of elbow room in northeastern Washington for the opening weekend of the general rifle deer hunting season.

A combination of the economy and the new four-point minimum restriction on whitetail bucks in Units 117 and 121 many have been factors in reducing the number of hunters, state game managers say.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Department check station at Deer Park recorded the lowest counts on record for both deer and hunters for the opening of the modern firearm deer season, said Dana Base, district wildlife biologist in Colville.

Hunter success on whitetails was 5.9 percent in Unit 117 (49 Degrees North), down from 6.6 percent last year.

In North Idaho, hunter numbers and harvest were up slightly at the Enaville check station, Fish and Game officials say.
