Pullman wins GNL volleyball, girls soccer crowns

The Pullman volleyball team accomplished the first step in its quest for a third straight State 2A volleyball championship on Saturday night.

The Greyhounds (10-2) wrapped up the Great Northern League championship with a sweep of visiting Medical Lake (0-12). Game scores were 25-19, 25-11, 25-12.

Jenny Nakata had 14 kills and 19 digs for Pullman, which earned a first-round bye in the District 7 2A tournament, which starts on Wednesday.

• Jamie Weisner had 17 kills and Rachel Folsom added 16 assists and five aces to guide Clarkston (9-3) to a 25-15, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23 win over visiting Cheney (6-6).

The win, coupled with West Valley’s win over Deer Park (4-8), will force a tiebreaker between Clarkston and West Valley (9-3) to determine the second and third seeds to the district tournament.

The match will be played at 7 p.m. Monday in Colfax.

The second seed will earn a first-round bye and the third seed will play sixth-seeded Deer Park on Wednesday.

• Sequoia Lofton had 12 kills as West Valley swept Deer Park 25-13, 25-3, 26-24. Aaliyah Ashley-Meek added 22 assists and eight aces for the Eagles.

Girls soccer

Laura DeWald had two goals and two assists as host Pullman blanked Medical Lake 7-0 for its first Great Northern League championship since 2008.

The Greyhounds (10-2) outshot the Cardinals 19-1.

Pullman will have a first-round bye in the District 7 2A tournament, which starts Thursday. Medical Lake (0-12), which finished last in the GNL, saw its season come to an end.

• Chae Brown scored her 15th goal of the year in the seventh minute as Cheney beat host Clarkston 4-1. Kendyl Cone assisted on two of the goals for the Blackhawks, who moved into a tie with East Valley for second place.

Cheney (9-3) and East Valley (9-3) will play in a tiebreaker on Tuesday to determine the second and third seeds to the district tournament. The second seed will earn a first-round bye and the third seed will host No. 6 Deer Park (3-9) on Thursday.

Clarkston (3-9) is the fifth seed and will play at No. 4 West Valley (8-4) in a loser-out match Thursday.
