Eastern’s Edwards, Jarrett honored

College football: Eastern Washington junior wide receiver Nicholas Edwards and senior kicker Mike Jarrett won Big Sky Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances against Sacramento State last Saturday.

It is the third straight week an Eastern player has been honored. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell won it the past two weeks.

Edwards (pictured) finished the Sac State game with 11 catches for a career-high 192 receiving yards, and had TD catches of 35, 16, 39 and 22 yards from Mitchell in the Eagles’ 42-35 OT win. Edwards was also named the Sports Network/ Fathead.com co-National Player of Week, and performer of the week and wide receiver of the week from College Football Performance Awards.

Jarrett made field goals of 28 and 41 yards to earn the league’s special teams award. He is one field goal from setting the single-season school record for field goals and 15 points from EWU’s career record for kick scoring.

USC’s Galippo apologizes

College football: Southern California linebacker Chris Galippo has apologized for claiming Notre Dame quit in the final minutes of the 20th-ranked Trojans’ victory in South Bend last Saturday.

USC coach Lane Kiffin called Irish coach Brian Kelly to apologize for Galippo’s comments after USC’s 31-17 win.

Galippo is a senior linebacker who was recruited by Notre Dame. He said the Irish are “not anything like USC” after they declined to use their timeouts to slow the Trojans’ final drive in the fourth quarter, ending the game by consuming nearly seven minutes.

USC tailback Marc Tyler said the Trojans wore out the Irish. Quarterback Matt Barkley echoed his teammates’ comments on a Los Angeles radio show on Monday, saying USC thought Notre Dame just gave up.
