Mead sweeps LC to clinch regional berth

Paige Montgomery had a match-high 10 kills and top-seeded Mead played its entire roster Tuesday during a home sweep of No. 4 Lewis and Clark to open the District 8 4A volleyball tournament.

Jonni Dorr added five aces as the Panthers qualified for regionals and advanced to Saturday’s district title match at Mt. Spokane. Mead will play at 3 p.m. against today’s winner between No. 2 Gonzaga Prep and No. 3 Central Valley.

After the title match, LC will play a winner-to-regional, loser-out match against the loser between G-Prep and CV.

• Top-seeded Colville and No. 2 Freeman won home matches to qualify for regionals and advance to the championship match of the District 7 1A tournament. Joelee Buckner had six kills and four teammates added five kills apiece as Colville swept No. 4 Newport. Newport led the first game 5-0 before the Indians scored 40 of the next 41 points. Leanna Carr added 21 assists and three aces for Colville. At Freeman, Haley Peterson’s 10 kills and three blocks guided the Scotties to a sweep over No. 3 Lakeside. Freeman’s Katie Pintar added 23 assists. The tourney continues Saturday at Colville, starting with the 1 p.m. title match for regional seeding. Lakeside and Newport will follow with a winner-to-regional, loser-out match.

Girls soccer

Amanda Bliesner scored twice and Brittany Dugger had one goal and one assists as East Valley defeated Cheney 5-0 in a Great Northern League second-place tiebreaker at West Valley. EV (11-6) and No. 1 Pullman (12-4) will host second-round matches of the District 7 2A tournament at noon Saturday. The tourney begins at 4 p.m. Thursday with loser-out matches: No. 6 Deer Park (5-10) at Cheney (9-7), and No. 5 Clarkston (3-10) at No. 4 West Valley (11-4).

Men’s golf

Jarred Bossio tied for ninth place to lead Idaho to a tie for sixth at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate at New Mexico State University’s course in Las Cruces.

Bossio shot a third-round, 2-under-par 69 to finish at 2-under 211, 12 behind medalist Hunter Sparks of Wichita State. The Vandals carded a 7-over 859 to finish 41 shots behind team champion UNLV.

Men’s basketball

Whitworth, which returns two starters from last year’s 28-2 team, is ranked 12th in the D3hoops.com preseason poll.

The Pirates advanced to the NCAA Division III section finals last year.

Whitworth’s returning second-team All-Northwest Conference selections are senior post Felix Friedt and junior point guard Wade Gebbers.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth senior Anisa Babar was named NWC Defensive Player of the Week after her Pirates held George Fox and Pacific to six shots apiece during matches last weekend.
