School Notes: Stockton inducted into G-Prep Hall of Fame

Gonzaga Prep recently inducted new members into its Hall of Fame. The 2011 Hall of Fame inductees include:

John Stockton, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1980. Stockton made All-Greater Spokane League in basketball as a senior at G-Prep and attended Gonzaga University. He was drafted by the Utah Jazz in his senior year and remained on the team for 19 seasons. His honors include All-NBA First Team, 1994 and 1995; All-NBA Second Team, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1993 and 1996; All-NBA Third Team 1991, 1997 and 1999; NBA All-Defensive Second Team, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1995 and 1997; 10-time NBA All-Star; Olympic gold medalist, 1992 and 1996; and One of 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, 1996.

Steve Gleason, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1995. Gleason earned consecutive GSL football Defensive MVP awards and attended Washington State. He has played for the New Orleans Saints and in September 2003, after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Gleason formed the One Sweet World Foundation, a charitable foundation that focuses on literacy and environmentalism. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, his foundation led a group of foundations and institutions in launching “Backpacks for Hope,” an initiative to provide relief to young hurricane victims in the form of backpacks and school supplies. More than 7,000 backpacks were donated from across the country, along with cash donations and other assistance.

Lisa Oriard, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1984. Oriard was one of the most decorated University of Washington women’s basketball players during the 1980s. Her talent on the basketball court led to scholarship offers from Division 1 universities.  After graduation, she shifted to coaching and spent eight years coaching at the college level at Whitworth, Boise State and Washington State University.

Donna Lenseigne, served as Gonzaga Prep’s registrar and admissions secretary and the varsity girls’ tennis coach. With Lenseigne as coach, G-Prep won seven straight Greater Spokane League championships, from 1997-2003. More than 80 girls turned out for tennis each year because of her passion, care and love of her players. And, she was one of the main driving forces behind the new tennis courts at Prep.

Ron Long, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1965. Long joined the G-Prep faculty in 1972 and has taught all levels of history, including advanced placement U.S. history, courses on the Middle East and the Holocaust. He was social studies department chairman, dean of students in the late 1970s, an ASB moderator and a senior class adviser. Long was also the assistant track coach and attended several national Jesuit Secondary Education Association conferences. He has been honored as the Washington Federation of Independent Schools Teacher of the Year.

The 1931 Football Team. The 1931 Gonzaga Prep varsity football team won eight straight victories, winning the city and state championship, all while holding each of their opponents scoreless, under Coach Hunton. The end of the season record was Gonzaga 159, opponents 0.

Bill Shanks, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1954. Shanks has been serving as the varsity football team doctor for more than 42 years. He has had a constant presence on and off the field since 1970, supporting the football program through treatment, physicals and generosity of spirit.

Dan Murphy, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1958. Murphy has worked for 43 years for Central Pre-Mix Concrete Co. and has served as president of the boards of the Associated General Contractors; Catholic Charities, Catholic Foundation; and the Washington Aggregate Association. He served as a trustee of Seattle University for 15 years, a trustee of the Teamsters Pension Board for eight years and a member of the Spokane City Planning Commission for four years. Murphy and his wife also chaired the campaign to build the Chapel of the Three Companions.

Tim Welsh, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1963. Welsh is the President of Garco Construction Inc. and Acme Concrete Paving Inc and was the president of the Inland Northwest Associated General Contractors. He is the president of the Spokane Area Good Roads Association and has served as a board member of Gonzaga Prep, Gonzaga University Board of Regents, Community Colleges of Spokane Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council, Junior Achievement, Boy Scouts and the Spokane Diocesan Board. He has been honored with the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal 2007 and the Bishop’s Medal in 2010.

John Traynor, r etired Gonzaga Prep president. Traynor recently retired his post as G-Prep’s president. He was a member of the Society of Jesus for four years, from 1962 to 1966 and served on the Governor’s Commission on Student Learning; earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Gonzaga University in 1996; and served on the board for the Jesuit Secondary Education Association. He also initiated the process for securing a $10 million tax exempt bond for G-Prep, a first in the state of Washington for a religious school. He is the recipient of the St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal, the Distinguished Administrator of the Year for the Washington Federation of Independent Schools and the Bishop’s Medal.

Dick Sprague, Gonzaga Prep graduate, class of 1949. Sprague earned a law degree at Harvard University and coached football at the Ivy League school after graduating from the University of Washington. As a Husky, he was named to the list of College All-Americans. Sprague was an attorney for 40 years at Bogle and Gates and the rest of his law career for Kemper Development Co. in Bellevue. He was a civic leader, serving on hospital, school, bank and fundraising boards. He is a highly decorated UW athlete and has been inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame and saluted as a member of the Husky Centennial Team.

The Rev. Bill Hayes, S.J. , principal and president of Gonzaga Prep from 1962-1976. Father Hayes currently works in Planned Giving for Jesuit High in Portland. He is the consummate Jesuit high school administrator and was the president of Jesuit High from 1984-1998, vice principal there for two years, and a teacher at Marquette High School in Yakima. Father Hayes was the principal and eventually president of G-Prep from 1962-1976. He has received Gonzaga Prep’s St. Aloysius Gonzaga Medal, the Pedro Arrupe Award and the St. Peter Canisius award from Jesuit High and honorary doctorates from Seattle University and Gonzaga University. He is also a trustee at Gonzaga University.

KSPS airs live forum ‘Educating Spokane’

Members of the community will have the opportunity to have their questions answered about Spokane Public Schools when “Educating Spokane” airs tonight at 7:30 p.m. on KSPS channel 7.

Sue Chapin, the school board president, board directors Garret Daggett and Jeff Bierman and Spokane Public Schools Superintendent Nancy Stowell will be available to answer questions and respond to comments from the public.
