Two people arrested as drive-by accomplices

Two more suspects were arrested Wednesday in connection with the 2007 shooting death of Daniel Burgess.

Jaleesa D. Anderson, 22, and Marc A. Anderson, 20, were arrested on a charge of accomplice to first-degree murder.

On Monday, Derrick Gregory Martin-Armstead was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Nov. 12, 2007, shooting. Spokane police allege Martin-Armstead talked about his involvement in Burgess’ death while in jail on another shooting charge.

Martin-Armstead allegedly told a fellow inmate that Jaleesa Anderson drove him and his cousin to Burgess’ home at 2413 N. Dakota Ave., where his cousin “got out of the car and shot a .22 revolver at the residence several times,” according to court documents filed Monday. But Spokane police Officer Jennifer DeRuwe said investigators consider Martin-Armstead the “trigger man” in the crime. DeRuwe could not confirm whether Marc Anderson was Martin-Armstead’s cousin.

Jaleesa Anderson was dating Martin-Armstead at the time of the shooting, and the two applied for a marriage license last year, according to court records.

Court documents also note that witnesses saw a 1996 Ford Thunderbird driving by Burgess’ house just before the shooting. Officers saw the same make and model of car outside Jaleesa Anderson’s residence two days later.

According to the jailhouse informant, Martin-Armstead said Jaleesa Anderson stole marijuana from two men and that the men responded by throwing a wrench through his front window. The shooting was in retaliation, police allege he told other inmates.

Burgess died of a .22-caliber gunshot wound to the chest, according to court documents.
