Roundup: Hamer’s goal lifts Zags to OT soccer victory

Nick Hamer scored his first goal of the season in the 98th minute as Gonzaga’s men’s soccer team beat Long Island University 1-0 in overtime at the USD Nike Classic on Sunday in San Diego.

Hamer took a pass from Josh Phillips directly in front of the keeper for the only goal of the game as the Bulldogs (1-2-0) won their first game of the season. The possession came off a corner kick by Justin Hill.

Ryan Caballero made five saves for his third career shutout.

Gonzaga’s next game is Sept. 14 at Seattle University.

• Robby Ubben scored twice and Cameron Bushey and J.T. Meyer notched assists as Whitworth beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 2-0 in Whitewater, Wis.

Brian Sherpe made three saves for the victory as the Pirates went 2-0-1 on their season-opening Wisconsin trip. Whitworth is in action again Sunday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Forest Grove, Ore.

• Washington and No. 22 Florida Gulf Coast played to a 1-1 tie in Portland. Dylan Tucker-Gangnes scored the tying goal in the 83rd minute for the Huskies (2-0-1), who play at Seattle University on Sunday. Spencer Richey made three saves for UW.

Women’s soccer

Washington State’s Brandi Vega scored 36 seconds into the match en route to a 3-1 victory over Weber State in Pullman. Micaela Castain and Tiara Pittman also scored for the Cougars (4-1-0), who travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic. WSU plays Virginia on Friday and Central Florida on Sunday.

• Eastern Washington’s Whitney Brannan scored her first goal of the season seven minutes into the match, but Wyoming scored twice in the second half for a 2-1 victory in the Eagles’ home opener. Eastern (0-5-0) hosts Gonzaga on Saturday.

• Megan Lopez scored the game-winner in the 78th minute as Idaho beat Montana 3-2 in Moscow in Governor’s Cup play. Bailey Hewitt and Chelsea Small also scored for the Vandals (2-2-2), who made Pete Showler the winningest coach in program history with 34 victories. Small’s goal was the 25th of her career, an Idaho record.

The Vandals head to Missoula for the Montana Nike Cup this weekend, with matches against Utah Valley on Friday and North Dakota State on Sunday.

• Chelsea Archer, Sarah Martinez and Hillary Zevenbergen found the back of the net to give Washington its first victory of the season, a 3-1 win over Seattle University at Husky Soccer Field. Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman made one save for the Huskies (1-3-1).

• Anna Valentine scored three goals and Carissa Christensen scored twice as North Idaho College routed Chemeketa Community College 8-1 in Coeur d’Alene. Callie Martin, Demi Wignot and Adrienne Moore also scored for the Cardinals.

Hockey

Anthony Bardaro scored twice and had two assists as the Spokane Chiefs finished a perfect weekend with a 5-1 win over the Portland Winterhawks in Everett.

Spokane went 3-0 at the Everett Silvertips preseason tournament. Marek Kalus, Collin Valcourt and Domink Uher also scored for the Chiefs.

Mac Engel and Jacob Edwards split time in net for Spokane. Engel started and stopped all 15 shots he faced, while Edwards played just over 27 minutes and stopped 13 of 14 shots.

The Chiefs head to Kennewick for preseason games against Seattle on Friday and Tri-City on Saturday.
