Churches plan 9/11 services

A few Valley churches are planning special services of remembrance Sunday to mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

• The pastors of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Millwood Presbyterian Church and New Hope Bible Church will come together for a special service at 4 p.m. Sunday at Zion Lutheran, 8304 E. Buckeye Ave. The service will include scripture-based meditations, hymns and organ music. Light refreshments will be available following the service. All are invited.

• The Veradale United Church of Christ, 611 N. Progress Road, will host a service of remembrance at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. The service will include a hymn written specifically for the anniversary titled “O God, Our Hearts Were Shattered.” All are welcome.

Back to church

New Life Assembly of God Church will host concerts by the Beatles tribute band “Crème Tangerine” next weekend to mark National Back to Church Sunday. The group will perform at 7 p.m. Sept. 17 and at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sept. 18. The final concert at 1 p.m. will be preceded by a barbecue and children’s carnival at noon.

Back to school

The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection will kick off its Sunday school program on Sunday. The church will once again offer services at 8 and 10 a.m., with Sunday school beginning at 10 a.m. The last service will be followed by the church’s annual Grandparents Day barbecue. The church is at 15319 E. Eighth Ave.

Schedule changes

• Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye, will return to its regular worship schedule this week. A traditional service will begin at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, followed by a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Bible Hour begins at 9:45 a.m.

• Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road, will begin its weekly worship service at 10 a.m. on Sundays. The fall kick-off event will follow this week’s service and brunch will be served.

Parish picnic

St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams Road, will have its annual parish picnic hosted by the Knights of Columbus from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The menu will include barbecue chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob and ice cream. The picnic will be held outside in the courtyard, weather permitting, or inside the gym. There will also be games for kids. Donations will be accepted.

Spaghetti feed, auction

A spaghetti feed and silent auction fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road. Proceeds will benefit the Lance Morehouse Jr. Memorial Scholarship, which allows fathers of children with special needs to attend conferences and classes. The cost of the meal is $5 per person or $20 per family. Children 10 and younger eat free.
