Colfax special in victory over DeSales
Special teams turned out to be quite special for Colfax on Friday night.
Trailing by seven points in the third quarter, the Bulldogs got a second big play out of their special teams and beat visiting DeSales 20-13 in nonleague game.
Alvin Li returned a kickoff all the way to Colfax’s 2-yard line and then Levi Hardy punched in the touchdown to pull Colfax to within one point in the second quarter.
In the third, with the Bulldogs trailing 13-6, Austin Corean returned a punt to the 1-yard line and Li scored to put Colfax ahead 14-13. A Jacob Altieri 6-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth capped the scoring.
DeSales had an opportunity late in the game, but Justin Berarducci intercepted a DeSales pass in the end zone with less than 30 seconds left to seal the win for Colfax (1-0).
Deer Park 37, Lakeside (WA) 19: After a come-from-behind victory last week, the Stags had an easier time in a victory over the visiting Eagles. Jason Jorgenson ran for 84 yards and a touchdown and also returned a kickoff 87 yards for a score. Deer Park’s Colton Mead scored two rushing touchdown and threw for another. With the win, the Stags improved to 2-0. Lakeside fell to 0-2.
Lake City 42, Lewiston 14: The Timberwolves led 35-0 after three quarters and thumped the host Bengals in the nonleague game. Bobby Traverse threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Lake City, which improved to 2-1. Cole Zacha threw two touchdown passes to Lucky Gaskill in the fourth quarter for Lewiston (1-2).
West Valley 37, Colville 0: The Eagles’ defense shined in a drubbing of the host Indians. Terrynce Duke scored two rushing touchdowns to guide West Valley offensively. The Eagles improved to 2-0 while Colville fell to 0-2.
Cusick 52, Odessa-Harrington 48: Ryan Sample exploded for 250 yards rushing and four touchdowns and also threw for three scores as the Panthers (1-1) edged the Titans. Odessa-Harrington (1-1) scored with no time remaining to produce the final margin.
Wilbur-Creston 26, Columbia-Inchelium 14: Davey Ogle ran for 126 yards and a touchdown and made 26 tackles on defense to guide the Wildcats past the Timberwolves. Wilbur-Creston (1-1) held Columbia-Inchelium (1-1) scoreless in the first half.
Cheney 47, Timberlake 24: The Blackhawks raced out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and routed the host Tigers. Cheney’s Ben Bissell threw four touchdown passes, including two in the first quarter. Josh Majo caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception for another score for the Blackhawks, who improved to 2-0son. Timberlake fell to 2-1.
Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 27,Warden 21 (2OT): Chris Steinmetz scored on a 3-yard run in double overtime to give the Broncos (1-0) a win over visiting Warden. Steinmetz finished with 139 yards on 30 carries and scored four touchdowns. Warden’s Trent Bates passed for 305 yards and three TDs, but also threw four interceptions.
Wellpinit 48, Republic 0: A.J. Kieffer scored four total touchdowns to lead the Redskins (2-0) to a rout of the host Tigers (0-2). Kieffer scored two rushing touchdowns, scored on an interception return and added a kickoff return for another score.
Freeman 46, St. Maries 0: The Scotties (2-0) took control in the second quarter and cruised to a rout of the visiting Lumberjacks (0-2). Cody Unfred had first-half touchdown runs of 62 and 89 yards. Hayden Laabs added two rushing touchdowns for Freeman, which held St. Maries to 105 total yards.
Newport 40, Priest River 13: Keith Coulson and Draben Barranco scored two rushing touchdowns apiece to guide the Grizzlies (2-0) past the host Spartans (0-2). Travis Martin added a rushing touchdown and a throwing touchdown for Newport, which led 27-7 at the half.
Garfield-Palouse 44, Selkirk 0: Riley Hodges ran for 138 yards on nine carries and scored four first-quarter touchdowns as the Vikings (1-0) thumped the visiting Rangers (1-1). Kevin Knauff also scored on a 58-yard run in Garfield-Palouse’s explosive opening quarter.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 46, Liberty Christian 44: Brandon Peterson caught a 21-yard pass from Mike Olson in the fourth quarter to give the Warriors a win over host Liberty Christian. Derek Isaak scored four rushing touchdowns to guide Almira/Coulee-Hartline (2-0). Liberty Christian outscored the Warriors 28-8 in the second half, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Reardan 48, Bridgeport 6: The Indians (1-0) took control from the get-go and routed visiting Bridgeport. Niko Knezovich scored on a 2-yard run to open the scoring and then intercepted a pass and scored again to give Reardan an early 14-0 lead. From there, the rout was on. The Indians led 34-0 at the half and coasted the rest of the way.
Northport 48, Mansfield 8: Jerimeah Johnson ran for 95 yards and three touchdowns and added two passing touchdowns as the Mustangs ran away from host Mansfield. Northport (1-1) outscored Mansfield 28-8 in the second half to put the game away.
Colton 38, Salmon River 30: The Wildcats scored 30 first-half points and held on to beat the host Idaho school. Jake Straughn caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Josh Straughn.
Grangeville 51, Asotin 6: The Bulldogs led 32-0 at the half en route to the road win over the Panthers. Justin Robie ran for 252 yards on 28 carries and scored four total touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs, who improved to 3-0.

Lakeside 62, Mullan 14: Jeremy Stivers ran for 174 yards and scored four touchdowns to guide the Knights past the visiting Tigers. Lakeside’s Brandon Smith completed just 3 of 15 passes, but all three were touchdowns. With the win, the Knights improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. Mullan fell to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the NSL.
