Chiefs experience first defeat

Spokane ties it late, falls to Ams in SO

KENNEWICK – The Spokane Chiefs endured their first loss of the Western Hockey League preseason with a 3-2 shoot-out loss to the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Center.

The Chiefs trailed 2-0 halfway through the second period, but scored two power-play goals to force the shootout.

Cole Wedman, a 17-year-old rookie defenseman, scored Spokane’s first goal of the evening with the help of Mitch Holmberg and Anthony Bardaro, who were both credited with an assist. Wedman wasn’t done after that, as he assisted defenseman Cole Hamblin’s game-tying goal in the third period.

Holmberg made the shootout’s first goal, but that was all the Chiefs would muster. The Americans won the shootout 2-1.

The Chiefs had a shot advantage of 31-19, largely thanks to Spokane’s defense. In the final 45 minutes, Tri-City only managed 10 shots.

Spokane goalie Mac Engel played the entire 65 mintues, stopping 17 of 19 shots.

Wedman was originally a sixth-round draft pick in the 2010 WHL bantam draft.
