Standoff leads to arrest of armed robbery suspect

Spokane police arrested a 24-year-old man early today in a standoff that occurred following an armed robbery of two female pedestrians on North Nevada Street. Jeffrey C. Salvage was taken into custody during pre-dawn hours and booked into Spokane County Jail on one count of first-degree robbery. Police said the arrest came after the two pedestrians were confronted at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday by two men, who were armed with a handgun. The men demanded their purses. Police arrived quickly enough that one of the men ran into a nearby apartment. The other man, who was not identified, was detained. Negotiators for the department were called out and made contact with the man inside the apartment. Salvage surrendered after several hours. The case was turned over to major crimes detectives for investigation.
