Church notes: African singers in Spokane to advocate for orphans

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 8441 N. Indian Trail Road, will present the Watoto Children’s Choir in two performances Friday.

At 10 a.m., the concert will be for prekindergarten through sixth-grade students and their families. The 7 p.m. performance will be a full-length concert, but both are open to all ages.

The singers have been traveling the world since 1994 as advocates for an estimated 50 million children in Africa who have been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease.

Made up of children who were orphaned in Africa, the choir will present stories, music and dance.

Fowler United Methodist Church, 3928 N. Howard St., will present musician John Nilsen during its 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday.

Nilsen is a songwriter, pianist and guitarist from the Portland area.

An offering will be taken and CDs will be available for purchase.

Special services

St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St., will present Celtic celebrations weekly starting Sunday at 11 a.m.

The first service’s theme will be hospitality and will include Celtic prayers, readings and a Christian Communion service.

On Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., the church will present a Thursday evening Celtic Celebration to celebrate the life of Hildegard. The service will feature music by Janet and Brett Dodd. A potluck reception will follow the service.

Covenant United Methodist Church, 15515 N. Gleneden Drive, will present its new Sunday evening coffee-house-style worship services starting this Sunday at 5 p.m.

“Sunday Night Live” will feature casual services designed to encourage conversation. There will be music, Scripture and a chance to ask questions.

The evenings will include a children’s church for ages 5 through 12 and nursery care for children younger than 5.

Covenant will also present Sunday morning worship services at 9:30 a.m.

Volunteer and training opportunities

• 40 Days for Life Spokane, a pro-life effort, will present Sidewalk Counselor Training Sept. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N. Nevada St.

The training is for those who stand and pray at pro-life rallies to learn effective dialogue on the sidewalks.

The cost to attend the training is $25 and includes a workbook and manual.

Reservations must be made by Monday.

Catholic Charities of Spokane, 12 E. Fifth Ave., will present a volunteer information open house Tuesday from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.

The event will include tours of the facility and information about volunteer opportunities for its many programs.

Awareness walk

The Family of Faith Community Church will host the “Walk for Recovery” on Saturday at Franklin Park, located at Queen Avenue and Division Street.

Participants can register at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10. The event also includes hot dogs after the walk, art created by artists in recovery, music and door prizes. Information will also be available on recovery and prevention.
