Area Roundup: Gardner just misses course record in Mead win

Andrew Gardner missed a course record by 2 seconds Wednesday to help Mead’s boys defeat Shadle Park in a Greater Spokane League cross country opener at Audubon Park.

Gardner finished in 15 minutes, 5 seconds for a 17-second gap on Shadle’s Nathan Weitz. The Panthers outscored Shadle 25-31 by placing their five runners ahead of SP’s No. 4.

Champion Kendra Weitz (18:58) and runner-up Michaela Lindley (19:35) helped Shadle’s girls hold off Mead 25-32.

At Seven Mile, North Central’s boys and Gonzaga Prep’s girls swept a three-way meet that included Rogers. G-Prep’s Connor McCandless (16:35) won the boys race, but NC had the next seven runners across the line. NC’s Katie Knight (19:15) cruised in the girls race.

At Central Valley, Jake Hombel (16:15) and Matthew Fry (16:21) ran 1-2 as University’s boys broke away at the 2-mile mark to edge the host Bears 25-30. CV’s girls ran 1-3-5-6-7 for a 22-37 with over U-Hi. Alex Moore (20:33) took the lead with 400 meters to go for a 19-second win over U-Hi’s Ashlie Standow.

At Manito Park, Hunter Johnson (16:17) led Mt. Spokane’s boys to a sweep of host Lewis and Clark and Ferris. Mt. Spokane’s Molly Cole (20:25) won the girls race, but LC swept the team race, topped by Gracie Ledwith (20:43).

Boys soccer

T.J. McWhorter scored on a pair of second-half penalty kicks to give host Lake City a 2-0 win over Coeur d’Alene in Inland Empire League 5A play.

• Ryan Schwartz scored on a penalty kick in the first minute after the goalkeeper drew a red card, and Sandpoint went on to a 3-0 win over visiting Moscow in IEL 4A play.

College volleyball

Cristin Richards had 26 kills and 11 digs as Seattle University (2-10) outlasted visiting Gonzaga 3-2 in nonconference play.

Meredith Crenshaw had 14 kills for the Bulldogs (6-5), who scored the final three points to win the fourth game 26-24.

• Ariel Usher’s 15 kills helped Portland (6-7) defeat visiting Idaho 3-1 in nonconference play.

Allison Walker had 15 kills, eight digs and six blocks for UI (4-6), and Jennifer Feicht passed 1,500 career assists.

• Brigitte Lowe and Allison Reed combined for 23 kills as Community Colleges of Spokane (12-3, 2-0) notched a 3-0 sweep over Wenatchee Valley (1-5, 0-3) in NWAACC play at Spokane Falls CC.

Joni Nagy added 20 assists and 10 digs for the Sasquatch.

Men’s soccer

Colin Flynn scored his first two goals of the season and Ryan Caballero recorded his second consecutive shutout as Gonzaga (2-2) posted a nonconference win at Seattle University (1-2-2).

The Hamer brothers teamed up for the final goal, in the 69th minute, with freshman Zach feeding sophomore Nick.

Women’s soccer

Hallie Swan scored from 20 yards out with 40 seconds left to give host Whitman (2-2) a 3-2 win over Whitworth (0-3) in a Northwest Conference opener at Walla Walla.

Whitworth tied the match at 2 in the 79th minute when Sarah Berentson fed Allie Smith.

• Aubree Mercier (Post Falls) set up the first goal and scored the final one as North Idaho (5-0) posted a 4-0 nonconference win over host Eastern Oregon at La Grande.

Anna Valentine also had one goal and one assist for the Cardinals, who have outscored rivals 25-1 this season.
