Signed Two years ago, defenseman Tyler Myers was a fresh-faced 19-year-old unsure if he was going to make the Buffalo Sabres season-opening roster. On Thursday, Myers’ future in Buffalo was secured through the 2018-2019 season after he signed a seven-year, $38.5 million contract extension. Convinced that Myers, the NHL’s 2009 rookie of the year, has the potential to be one of the league’s elite defenseman, the Sabres wasted no time in locking up the player a year before his three-year rookie contract expired.

Agreed Anaheim career scoring leader Teemu Selanne is returning for another season with the Ducks, agreeing to a one-year contract. Selanne, 41, was the NHL’s eighth-leading scorer last season with 80 points, the third-best season by a player in his 40s in league history. The Finnish Flash is the 27th-leading scorer in NHL history, 14th in goals.

Acquired Toronto FC acquired Kyle Davies from the Los Angeles Galaxy for fellow defender Dasan Robinson. The move came just before Major League Soccer’s roster freeze, which runs through the rest of the regular season and the MLS Cup playoffs.

Filed Former Arizona coach Lute Olson contends in a lawsuit that he lost more than $1 million by investing in “bogus” bonds with David Salinas, the Houston financial adviser for college coaches who committed suicide while under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Olson’s suit, filed in federal court in San Diego on Sept. 7, accuses Salinas and an associate of fraud. It seeks to recover money the Hall of Fame coach says he invested six months after he retired in October 2008.

Retired Former Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre retired, ending a 15-year cycling career. Sastre won the Tour in 2008. He also finished runner-up in the Vuelta a España in 2005 and 2007 and the Giro d’Italia in 2009.

Released Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill was released from the hospital five days after he was stricken with a seizure on the sideline at the end of a game. The school announced later Thursday that Kill came back to campus after changing clothes and joined the Gophers for their entire two-hour afternoon practice.
