Rose, Wilson share lead after 2 rounds

Golf: Coming off his best round of the year, Justin Rose figured it couldn’t get much better in the BMW Championship at Lemont, Ill. He was good enough Friday for a 3-under-par 68 and a share of the lead with Mark Wilson.

Rose felt flat at times, especially early on the back nine at Cog Hill on a cool, overcast day in the Chicago suburbs. But a 3-iron within 30 feet for an eagle on the par-5 15th woke him up, and not even a bogey on the last hole changed his outlook on the day or the weekend of this FedEx Cup playoff event.

Wilson ran off four straight birdies around the turn, starting with a wedge to tap-in range at No. 8, and was steady the rest of the way for a 66.

They were at 11-under 131.

• Teen Thompson tops through two: Lexi Thompson shot a 4-under 68 to take the lead after two rounds of the Navistar LPGA Classic at Prattville, Ala.

The 16-year-old is at 10-under 134, two shots ahead of Stacy Lewis and Becky Morgan. Meena Lee is third at 7-under 137.

Edwall, Wash., resident Wendy Ward shot a second-round 69 and is nine strokes off the lead.

• Three share Champions lead: David Peoples shot a 6-under 66 and is tied atop an American-dominated leaderboard with Michael Allen and Mark Calcavecchia after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Songdo IBD Championship in Incheon, South Korea.

The trio share a one-stroke lead over Mark O’Meara, who finished at 5-under 67 at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea. The $3 million purse is the largest of any official Champions Tour event.

Spain, Argentina out front in Davis Cup

Tennis: Four days after losing a grueling U.S. Open final to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal dropped only four games in helping Spain to a 2-0 start against France in the Davis Cup semifinals.

Nadal routed Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 on his favorite clay surface, and David Ferrer cruised past Gilles Simon 6-1, 6-4, 6-1 to put Spain ahead at Cordoba’s bullring in the best-of-5 series.

Defending champion Serbia, playing without Djokovic, trailed Argentina 2-0 in Belgrade in the other semifinal. Djokovic’s replacement, Viktor Troicki, lost to David Nalbandian 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Serb Janko Tipsarevic was beaten by Juan Martin del Potro 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

NFL tightens security after taser incident

Football: The NFL has “enhanced” its security pat-down procedures for fans entering stadiums.

The league asked its 32 teams to instruct stadium security to search fans from the ankles up for banned items such as alcohol and weapons. Previously, the search was from the waist up.

Last week, a man was arrested for using an illegal stun gun at Sunday night’s Dallas Cowboys-New York Jets game.

Harding helps Dream win playoff opener

WNBA: Lindsey Harding scored 10 of her 21 points in the fourth quarter and the Atlanta Dream rallied to beat the Connecticut Sun 89-84 in Game 1 of their playoff series at Uncasville, Conn.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 Eastern Conference semifinals is Sunday in Atlanta.

• Whalen delivers victory for Lynx: Lindsay Whalen scored 20 points to lead the Minnesota Lynx past the San Antonio Silver Stars 66-65 in Game 1 of their WNBA Western Conference semifinal at Minneapolis.

Whalen made the game’s biggest defensive play, tipping a Silver Stars inbound pass to Maya Moore with 4 seconds left to seal the victory.

Game 2 will be Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.

Spain, France in Euro basketball final

Basketball: Defending champion Spain and France will play for the European men’s title Sunday at Kaunas, Lithuania, giving both nations spots in next year’s Olympics.

Juan Carlos Navarro scored 35 points, leading defending champion Spain past Macedonia 92-80.

France, with 22 points from Tony Parker, beat Russia 79-71 and is in the title game for the first time.

Dillon pulls away to win trucks race

Miscellany: Austin Dillon earned his second Trucks Series win of the season by holding off Kevin Harvick at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Ill.

Dillon pulled out to a sizable advantage after the final pit stops and was never challenged over the closing laps.

• Report: Syracuse, Pittsburgh talking to ACC: The New York Times is reporting Syracuse and Pittsburgh are in talks with the Atlantic Coast Conference about leaving the Big East to join the conference.

• Bolt, Blake sizzle at Van Damme: Usain Bolt ran the season’s fastest time of 9.76 seconds in the 100 meters at the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels and was still upstaged by training partner Yohan Blake, who powered his way to history’s second-fastest 200.

Blake was timed in 19.26 seconds, just 0.07 seconds off Bolt’s world record.
