Around the Big Sky

Portland State 31, Northern Arizona 29: Cory McCaffrey ran for 222 yards and four touchdowns as the Vikings held on for a victory over visiting Lumberjacks on Saturday night.

NAU had a chance to win in the final 10 seconds, but Matt Myers’ 41-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide left. That allowed the Vikings (2-0, 1-0 conference) to snap a four-game losing streak to the Lumberjacks (1-2, 0-1).

Despite the close score, Portland State never trailed in the game, thanks in big part to McCaffrey, who now has seven touchdowns for the season. But Northern Arizona made it interesting with a fourth-quarter comeback.

Montana St. 43, Minot St. 7: DeNarius McGhee passed for 227 yards and two touchdowns, and Cody Kirk ran for 75 yards and two scores as the Bobcats scored 38 first-half points and coasted to a rout of the Beavers in Bozeman.

The Bobcats (2-1) compiled 370 total yards en route to a 38-0 halftime lead before benching their starters for most of the second half. McGhee, who was 13 for 20 passing, threw a 60-yard touchdown to Elvis Akpla in the first quarter and a 7-yarder to Everett Gilbert before halftime. Kirk scored on 1- and 14-yard runs in the second quarter.

Minot State (0-4), an NAIA program, avoided its second shutout of the season when Bryce Jorgenson scored on a QB sneak with 41 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Idaho St. 50, N. Colorado 20: Kevin Yost passed for 508 yards and four touchdowns as the Bengals defeated the Bears in Pocatello, Idaho.

The victory was the first over a Division I team for Idaho State (2-1, 1-0 conference) since the final game of the 2009 season.

Derek Graves had 15 catches for 114 yards for the Bengals, and Rodrick Rumble continued his prolific play with 14 receptions for 158 yards and a TD. In three games, Rumble has 34 catches for 520 yards and five scores.

Northern Colorado (0-3, 0-1) scored touchdowns on a 10-yard pass from Seth Lobato to Patrick Walker and 58-yard V.J. Holmes interception return.

 Weber St. 49, Sacramento

St. 17: Mike Hoke threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another score to lead the Wildcats to a win over the Hornets in Odgen, Utah.

Hoke completed 17 of 33 passes for 198 yards, Shaydon Kehano caught two touchdown passes and Tanner Hinds rushed for 104 yards and a score for the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0 conference), who pulled away from the Hornets (1-2, 0-1) with 35 second-half points. Weber State had only 22 yards rushing at half and finished with 324 yards on the ground.

Sacramento State remains winless in eight tries in Ogden since joining the Big Sky in 1996.
