Area roundup: Bremer lifts Cougars to OT victory

Freshman Beau Bremer scored in the fifth minute of overtime to lift the Washington State Cougars (6-2-1) to a 2-1 victory over the Idaho Vandals (3-4-2) in nonconference women’s soccer action Sunday in Moscow, Idaho.

Bremer also scored early in the second half to pull the Cougars even at 1-1.

Katie Baran’s goal 3 minutes into the game gave Idaho a 1-0 lead.

• Mackenzie Grow scored from 12 yards out early in the second half and goalkeeper Callie Bergstrom made it stand up as the Whitworth Pirates (1-3-1, 1-1-1) held on for a 1-0 win over the George Fox Bruins (1-4-2, 1-2) in Northwest Conference play in Newberg, Ore.

• Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman stopped 9 of 10 shots to help guide the visiting Washington Huskies (3-3-2) to a 3-1 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-4) in nonconference play.

Sarah Martinez, Allie Beahan and Lindsay Elston scored goals for the Huskies. Ali Ohashi tallied GU’s lone goal.

• Aubree Mercier scored five straight goals to propel the host North Idaho Cardinals to a 12-1 win over an Idaho Vandals club team.

Men’s soccer

Kekoa Mountcastle scored a pair of goals and J.T. Meyer and Andrew French both added a goal and an assist to power the Whitworth Pirates (4-1-1, 2-0) to a 4-0 victory over the George Fox Bruins (2-4, 0-2) in Northwest Conference action in Newberg, Ore.

• Michael Leptich and Chad Ward each had a goal and an assist and the NIC Cardinals cruised to a 4-0 win over a visiting Idaho Vandals club team.

Volleyball

The CC Spokane Sasquatch – behind tourney MVP Brigitte Lowe – defeated Clackamas 25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17 to win the Clackamas Crossover.

Junior hockey

Jeff Coates had a hat trick and the Penticton Lakers (2-1) scored three times in the third period to knock off the visiting Spokane Braves 5-2 in KIJHL play. Zak Kroll scored both goals for the Braves (1-2).
