In brief: Death toll in Reno crash is 10 as patient dies from injuries

LOS ANGELES – The death toll from last week’s air crash in Reno, Nev., increased to 10 on Monday, as the National Transportation Safety Board continued its investigation into why the vintage World War II fighter plane plunged to the ground, sending deadly debris into the stands.

St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center announced that a patient in its care had died from injuries related to the crash, which had already claimed the lives of eight spectators. The pilot, Jimmy Leeward, 74, of Florida, also was killed.

The hospital did not identify the latest person to die.

MacArthur ‘genius’ winners include skyscraper architect

CHICAGO – The latest list of MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” recipients includes Chicago skyscraper architect Jeanne Gang, New York City children’s choir founder Francisco Nunez and North Carolina concussion researcher Kevin Guskiewicz.

The $500,000 fellowships for 2011 were announced Tuesday by the Chicago-based John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

Recipients can spend the no-strings-attached grant money however they like. But many say the honor makes them focus on what they would accomplish in their fields if only they had the means. Many of this year’s recipients say they’re still making plans for the money.

As in previous years, a wide variety of fields are represented on the list of recipients, including both arts and sciences.

Church shooting suspect killed previous wife

LAKELAND, Fla. – In the years before he was accused of killing his wife and wounding two pastors, Jeremiah Fogle’s zigzagging lovelife spanned at least six other marriages and another violent death: A previous wife died at his hands more than two decades ago.

Fogle, now 57, managed to get only probation in 1987 after pleading guilty to manslaughter for shooting the woman he was married to back then. Fogle was charged with murder and attempted murder after Sunday’s shootings and was ordered held without bail at a hearing Monday. Authorities said he killed his 56-year-old wife, Theresa, with three shots at their home and then wounded a pastor and associate pastor at the nearby Greater Faith Christian Center Church – where Fogle had once been a deacon. The Fogles were married there in 2002.

The congregation was bowing their heads in prayer when Fogle burst inside. Church members were able to tackle him, take away the gun and hold him until deputies arrived.
