Harrop misses costs
In response to Froma Harrop (Sept. 17), I say she is arguing the wrong aspect of the problem. The question is not whether the climate is warming. The question is whether the solutions are worse than the possible adverse effects of the warming.
Our standard of living depends on fossil fuels and it will for some time. She talks about unsustainable air conditioning bills in Texas. Green electricity costs about three times that of coal-generated electricity. If we implement the green agenda, everyone in the southern United States will have unsustainable electric bills. Most of the rest of the world has decided to strive for prosperity and take their chances on warming. The Kyoto Accord is all but dead.
If we implement the green agenda in this country, we will be a lot poorer, and according to their model, it will not change the warming trend significantly. The greens would do this to feel virtuous.
This is their version of true believers ignoring science and economics. It is entirely logical to choose to deal with the uncertain and localized effects of warming to not incur the certain widespread economic effects of doubling or tripling our energy costs.
