Several victories for area runners

Mead’s Andrew Gardner won the individual title while Mt. Spokane took the team title Saturday at the Mountain West Classic cross country meet at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula.

Gardner posted a time of 14 minutes, 38.4 seconds, more than 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Mt. Spokane tallied a team score of 100, followed by University (138), Bozeman (144) and Lewis and Clark (159).

Other local runners who finished inside the top 10 included Lewis and Clark’s Sumner Goodwin (fourth, 15:07), Mt. Spokane’s Hunter Johnson (sixth, 15:15.7), University’s Jake Hombel (ninth, 15:24.7) and Mead’s Daniel Schofield (10th, 15:25.5).

In the girls race, Gonzaga Prep finished fourth behind Bozeman, Missoula Hellgate and Billings West.

• North Central’s Katie Knight took first place in the girls elite race at the Bob Firman Invitational in Boise.

Knight finished the 5,000-meter course in 18:07.89.

In the boys race, North Central’s Kai Wilmot was eighth in 16:06.35. The Indians took fourth place and Coeur d’Alene was 10th.

• The Central Valley boys had five runners finish inside the top 10 and the Bears took first place at the Wenatchee Invite.

CV’s top finisher, Cory Hunter, took fourth place overall, finishing the 3-mile course in 16:15. Scott Allen was seventh in 16:24, followed by Bears teammates Drew Brown (eighth, 16:33), Matt Hommel (ninth, 16:33) and Jared Seckel (10th, 16:43).

Boys soccer

Lake City 1, Lewiston 0: Kyle Lamson’s fifth-minute goal proved to be the difference as the Timberwolves shut out the visiting Bengals in an 5A Inland Empire League matchup. Lake City goalkeeper Tanner Horton made six saves. Lake City improved to 5-3 and 2-0 in the IEL and Lewiston fell to 3-9 and 0-4.

Girls soccer

Coeur d’Alene 2, Lewiston 1: Ashlie Ward scored her second goal of the match in the 60th minute to break a tie and give the Vikings a win over the visiting Bengals in an 5A Inland Empire League matchup. Ward scored her first goal 3 minutes into the contest. Cali Moscrip scored in the 30th minute for Lewiston. With the win, Coeur d’Alene improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the IEL. The Bengals fell to 3-3 and 2-2.

Timberlake 3, Orofino 2: April Sutton scored two first-half goals to lead the Lumberjacks to an Intermountain League victory over the visiting Maniacs.
