Haz/mat probe closes Holy Family emergency room

The emergency room at Providence Holy Family Hospital and several surrounding streets are closed as authorities investigate a report of a potential chemical spill.

Six people were being treated at the scene this evening for potential respiratory issues, and five others were being held for observation after a 5:13 p.m. report that a chemical had been dispersed in the entryway along the south side of the hospital, according to the Spokane Fire Department. Investigators have been unable to confirm whether any chemical release occurred, though.

Ambulance traffic is being diverted to other Spokane-area hospitals as the investigation continues. A portion of Lidgerwood Street is closed.

About 35 to 40 firefighters were on scene, including the department’s hazardous materials team.
